As promised, here's a brief description of a second OWC-related hardware failure. The first was the Accelsior4 M.2 card written up in another thread.
I bought an OWC/Thunderbay8 enclosure in April. In September it exploded!
We were working in our computer room at the time. It sounded like a very powerful M-80 firecracker went off on the table between us. My guess - after the fact - was that a large capacitor or similar electrical component overheated and exploded. No other damage, no smoke, no smell. Along with that there was total loss of data as I had no way of getting to the drives afterward.
I sent the housing back at their request. I paid $30+ to return it. About three weeks later I was notified of a refund, minus about $109 for some unexplained reason.
So all in all a fairly economical bit of education; only about $139US for that one.
Lesson: OWC's hardware wasn't reliable. Return carried a bit of economic penalty but not terribly bad.
Conclusion: No more OWC goods.
Interesting side note: I also have an OWC/Thunderbay4 which has been working fine for a year.
