OWC vs. Techworks memory - which is better?

Ready to buy 4GB memory for the new iMac 2.8 I just ordered. On the OWC site, the OWC memory is $239.99 and the Techworks memory is $289.99. So what is the difference between the two and which is better?
 
They're both fine. If the RAM works, it's all the same, so the important thing is that it works. But all RAM has a failure rate, and that means that the most important thing to do is buy from a seller who offers a lifetime warranty with free shipping. OWC does that for their own brand, so there's absolutely no reason not to go with it.
 
I've used both quite a bit and they're both quite good. For all intents and purposes, you won't notice any difference in the performance or stability of the OWC for the difference in price.
 
I've gone with OWC previously with absolutely no problems. I ordered a 4GB kit from them earlier today for my new iMac arriving wednesday or thursday. I have also used DMS, Crucial and Techworks. Never had a problem with any of them. So long as you buy from a reputable seller per the Apple specifications, you'll be fine. :)

As I said, nothing wrong with Crucial except they have the specification wrong for the new iMac. Their $549 4GB kit will work, but you'll get no advantage over other Memory modules that are per Apple specification. If you search a bit, Crucial also sells modules that are Spec'ed correctly for $159 per 2GB, which comes out to $318 for 4GB. This is still considerably more expensive than others offered around the net. :eek:

One interesting thing about Crucial, is that they claim to manufacture their memory in the USA! Isn't that rare!

The choice is yours. ;)
 
Thanks for all the great advice. :) I'll check the thread again tomorrow, and then make my decision and order. I would like to have the new memory ready and waiting when it's new home arrives. The new iMac likely won't be here until late next week, since I special ordered it.
 
I recommend the cheapest memory @ newegg. 2x2gb of Transcend brand for $200. (Currently $98.99/ea.)

Memtest the heck out of it after installation, and enjoy.
 
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and advice. I picked DMS and just placed my order for 4GB.
 
Down on OWC

Unlike others here, I have had bad :mad: experinces with OWC. Their implementation of their return policy needs vast improvement. And if you dare to call up and ask a question or complain about a complete sale (like where is my order it has been 8 weeks), be prepared for threats and very nasty behavior. A very Jekyl and Hyde operation: once they have your money they change from a freindly informative supplier to a crude & nasty monster.

Hey, don't believe me. Check with the BBB.
 
Update. I received my 24" 2.8 on Wednesday and installed 4GB of DMS memory today. Works great ;)

I have purchased and installed OWC brand memory in all my recent computers and been extremely happy with it.

Some of the computers I've installed their memory in are:

Mac Pro 2.66 GHz Quad
iMac G5 2.0 GHz 20-inch
iMac G5 1.8 GHz 17-inch
iBook G4 1.33 GHz 12-inch
Mac Mini G4 1.25 GHz
iMac G3 333 Lime
Compaq Presario with AMD 3400+ CPU

Maybe others, that's just all I can remember at the moment.

All of those computers worked fine with the memory, and have all been reliable with it.

I've always been very pleased with all my purchases with OWC. Their pre and post-sales support has always been great.

I've gotten a few external hard drives from them, some internal hard drives, loads of memory, some notebook accessories, PRAM batteries, and other misc. items. Every purchase has been smooth.

I couldn't possibly say enough nice things about them. By far, they have treated me better than any other company I've ever purchased from. And, if I had questions, they always had the patience to help me answer them.

Not to mention you get "name brand" ram instead of whatever house memory OWC and DMS are using at the moment.

This is a great deal for OCZ memory. Also for people in the san francisco bay area, you can order it online and PICKUP instore, this new way of purchasing just became available 3 days ago!!! Saw it posted....(Thanks for the tip) ordered it and picked it up today.

Remember though, one $20 rebate per household, gotta have another person get the 2nd stick if you want $40 back.
 
owc is great

i installed my 4gb 2x2 kit in my mbp today that i ordered from owc... works great and memtest approved... also since i am in chicago, il even with the cheapest standard ground shipping i ended up receiving it the next day since i'm only 50 or so miles away from their distribution site! :D

That is what I got, no complaints here :) I love having over 2 gigs worth of ram left even with a ton of stuff open :)
