Own domain name for email?

I've just signed up for the trial of mobileme and have a feeling I will be cancelling it soon as I don't think it will do what I want (unless anyone can tell me differently)

Currently I have my own domain name which runs through a friends exchange server and pushes email, contacts, calender to my phone and entourage. This works well but I get a large amount of spam so wanted to try mobileme to see if spam control was any better.

I haven't even got to that point at the minute as I can't see for the life of me how to use my own domain for email?

It seems the only alternative is to forward mail from my own domain to the @me.com email address which would result in any replies or new emails being sent from the @me.com email rather than my own domain.

Is there any way of setting this up or do I have to go back to exchange which "just worked"... :confused:
 
As far as I know - you can't use your own domain name with MM. Many people have designed work around solutions (forward from one account to MM, etc) but none that I have found acceptable for my purposes. I personally use gmail with my own domain name and am finding the spam protection to be excellent. I get a couple per day - all caught by the spam folder - and nothing in my inbox. Hard to beat that for the price (free for 7GB with your own domain).
 
Yeah, Google Apps works great for email with your own domain. I use it for two different accounts, it's fairly easy to set up and works well. You can still use it with Mail and the iPhone/iPod touch as well, so it's really just about as good (and free).

I have MobileMe, but I don't use the email. Like the two posters above, I forward my personal domain email to Gmail and let it do the filtering. Works great.
 
One of the old selling points for mobile me was that you had a .mac email address of course that went out the window (as a marketing approach) when they switched to .me.

Given that you have your contacts, email, calendar being sent to you via your own domain name/exchange server. One of the aspects of mobile me is negated. if you're happy with what you have, then there's no reason to change over to mobile me.
 
Agreed.

MobileMe is great if you don't have an Exchange server to keep things synced up, or you need the web hosting and file storage.

Otherwise, you may be better off with other services if you don't need the "whole package".
 
To the OP you have few options:

1) Is that Exchange Server running Microsofts IMF filter (based on Hotmail's spam filters). I run several servers and it eliminates 98-99% of spam.

2) You can always forward your exchange account to a gmail account their spam filter is the best.

3) You can host your @mydomain email directly at gmail for a cost.

For less than 100 users/personal uses, google apps is free - you only have to pay if you want the premiere edition.
 
i also own my own domain....and would like use it for my email...

i mean i want my email address to be

something like - "myname@mydomain.com"

i have a gmail acct that i can use for it....

i just dont know where to find this service on gmail ....

anyone wanna poin me on the right direction?
