Own PB, want MBP, but love blackbook!

So I am sure that there are many other users in here with a dilema similiar to my own.

I currently own a 1.5ghz powerbook with 2 gigs of RAM but it is far too slow now for even some basic everyday tasks. I am planning on upgrading when Centrino Pro is released, but I have found myself in a dilema.
My mom just got the new blackbook and I have been playing around with it a lot.

I love it, I dont just like this computer, I think this computer is great. She does not have it maxed out, but I just like the look and feel of the computer so much more than the current aluminum MBPs. I want a 15 inch sized laptop but the black color scheme, the keyboard layout, even the texture of the plastic is just awesome.

In all honesty, the most intense applications that I use my Mac for is final cut express (although I would like to game on a MBP, just boot up windows and enjoy some Steam) so I am not sure if I need a great graphics card.

I'm not sure, but if they release a 15 inch blackbook it may be VERRRRY tempting.

I doubt it. But hey, no one knows...they can claim they know, but they lie. :)
I for one love my PB but love the black book as well. However, I am in no rush to buy another notebook.
 
too slow?!

my 1.5ghz powerbook with 1gb ram ripped it up through everything I needed to do... dvd production, photoshop, just a bit of everything it did it super well. i now own a macbook pro and it does all the same but quicker... but I still find the 1.5ghz PPC very satisfying
 
Sounds as though you need to do an erase and install of OSX. I've found that every so often this is necessary. I'm not sure why you say the PB is slow. I upgrade from a 17" PB 1.67Ghz and can't tell that big of a speed increase. However, iMovie exports much much faster from what I've seen.

Just do a clean install.

Wow.. over $400 to paint a laptop.. I think I might get into this business on the side.

Just my opinion. I don't think it looks good 'cause the keyboard an trackpad are all still the stock color.

I thought i read rumors of a 15in MB???

To the OP: I have a 1.67 GHz powerbook. It's not as snappy as a MBP but it gets the job done just fine. It's more then capable for everyday email and internet usage. I would check and see if something's not quite right with your powerbook.

If you really want a black macbook go ahead and get it. I don't see apple ever offering a 15" version of the macbook (even if there are rumors). Also, you'll barely loose any screen real-estate compared to your powerbook since the macbook has a higher pixel density.
 
What do you mean that the PB is slow for basic tasks? Do you mean that it has always been slow and gotten worse only lately, or you say that it started to seem slow in comparison to the newer 'books?

I have a 1.5 Ghz PB with half the RAM of yours and it is not slow for basic tasks by any means. Sure, some things, such as huge Powerpoint files, are taxing (but those are slow even on Intel hardware), but I can do so many things with it simultaneously without it feeling slow. I played with MBPs at the Apple retail store and they did not seem much faster for basic tasks than my 2 year-old PB. I am sure that you can benchmark MBPs faster than the PB, but those would not be your basic tasks. Are you sure that there is nothing wrong with your PB?

apart from the spelling mistake, the word dilemma is used improperly all over this forum. It's real meaning is in choosing between 2 equally unattractive alternatives - like being between a rock and a hard place or the devil and the deep blue sea. Try using quandary.

Perhaps I do need a clean install. I did that about one year ago and it seemed to speed things up, but I also assumed that it was because I had just slapped another gig of RAM into it.

My hardrive is the same speed (5400 RPM) as the one in my moms blackbook (although hers is twice the size) but thing have felt very laggy lately (although everything works faster than my friends six month old Dell, ha). Perhaps I should run a clean install, I only have about fourteen gigs of space left and I have no idea what the hell it can all be. (And no, I do not have endless gigs of porn).

Any suggestions of other tips to speed up my lappy?

1.67GHz G4 2GBDDR2 user here and I find my PowerBook to be awesome for everything except video encoding. If I am burning a .AVI to a DVD, Toast takes a LONG time (4+ hours) to encode.

Oddly though, I don't see much of a speed difference between my PB and my Intel iMac. Yes, they're both using the UB version of Toast 8. Weird.

Anyway, I have felt the itch for the BlackBook lately, mainly for size. Plus that black is so very nice... but I'll always love the grin I get every time I flip open 17" of pure beauty.
 
Do you travel a lot with that 17 inch lamina?

Just wondering because my 15 inch is perfect for traveling but sometimes I would love some more screen realestate.

My PB goes where I go. To class, to the cafe... everywehre. Every single weekday I have this thing in my backpack (specially designed Targus one for notebooks). The pocket in the backpack was made for a 15" laptop, but my 17" fits in there just right.

The weight is kinda noticeable. 7 pounds plus a few books can get daunting. It's well worth the extra screen room though, especially when I'm doing research with 4 journal articles plus Word open. Photo editing is friggin sweet too, not to mention watching full-screen iTunes visualizations when I'm 'bored'. :)
 
i have a MBP 17' of course iam very happy with it,but everyday when i see my buddy's Black MB iam thinking of buying one of those.....:eek:
