I have a Rev B i.8 Ghz PPC iMac with 2 GB RAM (see sig below). I've had it for just over 2 years now.

Anyway, in the last few months, I've had a disappointingly large number of page outs (i.e. the balloon of death). Just opening Firefox causes stupidly long pageouts.

I haven't installed any fancy new software, and I have plenty of memory. I don't run any more simultaneous applications than I used to.

So why is this happening? Just because my computer is getting old, doesn't mean it should run any slower than it used to, as I am using the exact same applications now as when I first bought the machine.

Any ideas - or better still - solutions?

I expect this kind of thing from a crappy PC, not from my amazing & wonderful iMac.

You may be using the same things, but firefox has gotten bigger and more robust (or bloated depending on your view). Things like software updates to add features add bulk which eats memory. If you were using the same versions as you began with this may not be happening, perhaps?

Software grows with time, if your machine doesn't or cannot .. well you know.
