A problem I have had several times now. If I get an updates notification for Pages & Numbers in the App Store, the "sign in" box will appear, and when I sign in, it vanishes, only to return & request again & again & again. Any other updates available can be run, no problem. Signing out & signing back in does not work either. The only way I have found to "trick" it into working is to sign into our other App Store account which is for another Country, & then try & run the update(s). The box appears again, on trying to sign in it duly says this sign in is for another Country App Store, flips to there, I sign in again, & THEN it works! (Signing out, going over to the other App Store, signing in, signing out & back to the original Store does NOT work!!)

This only happens on my iMac that was updated to Sierra. My two laptops that came with Sierra do not have this problem. There are a few people commenting over on the Apple Community website that have exactly this problem - to date Apples' answer is to uninstall the App, & re-install, but I don't really consider that a fix!!

Any thoughts / other solutions?

If you do the uninstall/reinstall, does the issue come back with the next update?

If yes, then I agree, it'd be a workaround, not a fix.

However, if the issue does not return, then I'd consider it a fix.

The thing is, it doesn't happen with every app, just those two. Therefore, the trouble may have something to do with the current installations of those apps. Maybe the next update contains a fix for your specific problem, but chances are, if there is something damaged in the installation, it will remain on your drive, unchanged. Only an uninstall/reinstall may replace the (possibly) bad code.

That is the fix. Apple cannot verify thousands of users that have forgotten the account they used to download apps. The best, fix all, solution is to solve it in one step.

To clarify, there are many reasons that you continually receive the sign in modal. The most common is that the app was originally downloaded with a different userID / password combo ( but there are many more causes ). Your computer has determined an anomaly with the app credentials. Now that the app is free, it will not matter to delete app and reinstall with your current AppleID. Previously if you had deleted the app and tried to reinstall with your current credentials, the app store would have possibly required payment as the device had already received a free copy of pages & numbers under a different account.

That is the fix....
Unfortunately for me, that is not "the fix" as I cannot install the latest Pages and Numbers from the App Store. I'm on a wonderful 2009 17" MBP with SSD and internal HDD for storage. Works great!! But can't upgrade to Sierra (Thanks, Apple!!!). That prevents me from installing the latest Pages and Numbers. Although annoying, I guess the nag is worth it to have this nice large screen.

Understood - I have now uninstalled & reinstalled both apps & they work (as they did before), but at the time it was still frustrating! Thank goodness that they are both free now; to be clear, this is for sure the account I bought them on (Complete with confirmation email).

The apps have been working fine, & as the others who posted on the Apple Community all said, the problem only started after a Sierra upgrade.

As to if it fixed the problem, alas I have to wait for the next update until I know if the problem is fixed or not! :)

I understand the bean counters had a lot to do with the 17" going away. Apple just wasn't making any money on it. We have a 17" here at work, sitting sadly in the corner. Someday we will get around to donating it.

To also clarify this, it WAS possible to update both apps - it just involved the bizarre & very specific signing into another account & then being directed back to the original account as I described in my original post, so to me that does not indicate a problem with the installation, but rather an App Store problem. It is a weird one & I hope this reinstallation has fixed it.
