Pages paragraph style redefinition doesn't hold

When I create a paragraph style, and then change the font or size and click "update" and also "redefine from selection" I am finding that I have to click on the style name TWICE to make it in the updated or redefined style. The first time I click on the style name it goes to the previous font size. If I go to "clear override" it might change it to the correct font size then, but the next time I change a paragraph to that style, I again have to click it twice. This is time consuming and seems like a ridiculous issue. Wondering if there is some simple solution?
