paid for mobile me and wished you hadn't?

are there many people who have paid but who wish you hadn't? or maybe on the trial and will be canceling before the cutoff date?

so far for me:

• mail wouldn't send from the @me.com account on my iPhone [sorted now - account deleted and manually put back - problem was for some reason it was setting it up as @mac.com and you couldn't change it]

• syncing is carp - right now the iPhone syncs with the online interface, but address book doesn't get a look in even when you force it manually - but the bit(s) that don't work varies - very unreliable

• iDisk is very very slow - took about 15 minutes to sync a 2 meg file

All in all, it is something that you want to be very reliable, but it is the exact opposite - the idea has such potential but it has been executed so very poorly

Do others feel the same or am i just having a bad time with it?

I do indeed feel the same. I got a .mac account and was gobsmacked by how slow etc it was. I thought MobileMe was their 'do-over'. If so, This is one friend I'd think twice about before spending more money on.

How hard can it be? A multi billion $ company has so many resources and can't pull off an online product launch? It's getting ridiculous now. This whole past week was a farce for Apple. Customers picking up the iPhone 3G will be left with a very bad taste in their mouths. Unlocking should be stemmed, I agree, but not at the cost of legitimate customers.

the first iPhone experience was so refreshing. This new one reminds me of why I hate buying a new mobile phone (and tacked on services).

Cancelling MobileMe

Yeah, I'm going to cancel my MobileMe trial before it charges. I have not been able to find any use for it. The calendar and contacts uppdated once, but have yet to update again. Mail works but so does Gmail and Yahoo mail, so what's the point. And I agree, the iDisk is VERY slow.

MobileME sucks, but I've come to rely on it (well, .Mac which I've used for a year) now that I split my time across 2 different Macs.. and the over the air sync with the iPhone is nice to have.

I totally understand how you feel, but why not wait some more weeks? Mobileme functionalitywise has only just launched and there's a lot of kinks to work out still apparently. Although I'd like to believe that new software launches works perfectly from the launch day, there's still lots of bugs to fix afterwards...

wow, this is all extremely disappointing to hear. I'm about to set everything up on my trial version to see how it works but now i dont even know if its worth my time. one of the big pulls for me was the idisk, but if it takes 15 min to upload 2 mb then its useless...

I am under the trail period also. I don't think I will keep it. Gmail does the same mail, just not push.......yet. The calendar feature is nice, but didn't always sync like they claim. iDisk is very slow!!! Maybe I would consider this if it was cheapier then then $99 it's selling for. Right now at most I would pay would be $49. Hopefully google offers something similar to iDisk. I see why not they seem to get their hands on everything.

Okay I'm going to come off sounding like a fanboy, whatever...

What would a well managed company do? Dump untold millions of dollars into something that they "think" demand may be high or slowly ramp up to meet demand? We know what Microsoft would do but I said a "well manged" company.

So Apple will ramp up the service and iDisk access has been slow since it was free so I'm not sure why all the surprise around this.

Now, BEFORE you DO purchase MobileMe you should indeed TRY it. I for one enjoy the complete integration in Mac OS X.

Now BEFORE you PAY for it, go shopping on eBay, yup you should be able to pick up a one year .Mac (still works for MobileMe) for anywhere from $60 to $75. I purchased my family pack for $89 from eBay and have purchased it from there for the past three years.

It's been very reliable for me after the first weekend. I'm not saying you don't have a problem, but perhaps it's something specific to your situation, and not .Me in general.

This was my experience with the old .Mac. Since the update everything has been very fast and usable. I'm quite happy and consider .Me to be MUCH faster than .Mac was.

I think you're having a bad time.

On that note, I just spent the last week trying to get all my e-mail accounts working on the iPhone. I spent HOURS reading message boards trying to get it to work right.

Everything works now, and I'm very happy. Had you asked me yesterday my answer would have been differnt. Was any of this the phone's fault or the e-mail's fault? No, it's just that technology (even "easy" technology) can sometimes be a pain to deal with.

I don't know that I know enough to help you with your .Me problems...all I can say is that during all my problems, .Me was the one shining light that kept working even when nothing else did. I've been very happy with it overall.

Having used it on the .mac trial, then used it as it's going through it's teething process -
I've already said i'm going to help out others transfer across. I've got several people in my family that want to use it, and i've gifted a copy at a wedding already as a way to share the pictures of the wedding.

Yes, for a few days it was buggy, as it was very under pressure, but it's working very well now, and I should know, as i've been using pretty much constantly, both the me.com page and through my iPhone sorting out contacts, calendar, email and pictures. It's good to see changes come over in seconds, adding pictures from the computer, then editing them on the iPhone for example. Rock solid, and once you've made the investment, it's worth it - Now my contacts have all the address etc info, it's so easy to get the internet to their web address, email them, call them on home/work, text, and also get maps to /from where they are, wherever I am. You need to spend some time doing this, and the mobileme sync'er for PC for example ain't the nicest in the world. (Tip to people - Facebook has a .csv exporter that gives links to the profile pictures, if you want to rip them (put the url's into the home page of IE or Firefox then save the images or make a fancy script! (it gives most details but email is a picture (htey don't like people exporting data, booo Facebook)))

Just give it some time. You can always come back to it, and Apple is I believe mea culpaing and extending some of the time lengths for either what you get for a year's subscription, or the trial length.

I'm keeping it, I can sync my work pc to my Mac calendars and back so I only have to enter things once. Mail, contacts and calendar syncing have been working for me, every day gets a little bit better. I don't need immediate puch for many of these things, but have been happy with how soon the syncing is happening. I'll wait another few weeks before moving our personal domain over.

Plaxo fulfills all my syncing needs except sync my bookmarks, but I'm not paying $110 a year for bookmark synchronization.

My 60-day free trial runs through the end of August so I'm still waiting to see if the bugs get worked out.

No offense to those who paid without trying it first, but the whole point of offering a 60-day free trial is to give people a chance to see if they like it before they plunk down money.

oh wait they do??? Why didnt you test it for 60 days before paying for it? Or are you one of those people who didnt actually buy it but a 1 week free trial constitutes a purchase?

I was very happy with .Mac and the changes they've made transforming it to MobileMe are terrific. When my PC died and I switched over to using my MacBook Pro as my main computer, I went totally Mac, meaning I switched everything (my data, media, websites, etc) over to Apple's software like Address Book and the iLife suite. I love how they are all easy to use, well thought out, and completely integrated with each other. And .Mac was always a great compliment to it all. The upgrade to MobileMe is a nice transformation of an already useful service and has added functionality that is totally cool, especially the push technology. I'm now one very happy macuser.

I must admit that when I first got my MacBook Pro, I still had my pc as my main computer and I didn't feel the need to subscribe to .Mac. When I switched everything over, I gave it a try and I ended up buying it before my trial was over. Probably the one thing that has really sold me has been its photo and video sharing capabilities. After taking pics, I plug my camera into my computer, upload the images to iPhoto and then with just a few clicks I have an impressive website out there for my friends to use to view/download my photos and videos. I've used other third-party websites for sharing videos, but have never found one that enabled me to so easily post the full resolution vids. And I love how if I make little edits to my photo albums, the changes are kept in sync with my photo albums on the web. Very simple, as it should be.

So I guess it probably helps if you totally adopt using Mac. If you do, you'll quickly see how MobileMe becomes a very nice extension to all that you do. Definitely give it a try.

I purchased MobileMe and haven't really had any issues with it on my iPhone or my Mac, the web applications took a little longer than expected to come up but I knew with such a large migration that there would most likely be some teething problems. I will sum up my experience in point form:

• Very impressed with the mail service, push e-mail works great on my iPhone.
• Over-the-air syncronization from my iPhone to the MobileMe cloud and syncronization to my Mac works perfectly and vice versa (Mac to iPhone).
• iDisk is a lot faster after the MobileMe upgrade versus when it was .Mac.
• The web applications are brilliant, well designed, and very well thought out.
