I've been noticing an Airpods Max (APM) bug since I upgraded to iOS 16 (starting with the public beta but also with the regular release). The steps to recreate (for me) are:
  1. Put APM on head, play something for a while
  2. Take APM off, leave off for long enough that putting them back on won't automatically play the content that was playing
  3. The volume level will be WAY higher than it was (e.g., 75% instead of 25%).
  4. Pressing volume down will instantly jump the volume down to where it was before (instead of just down one normal increment)
If I had the volume level at about 25% when I took them off, it will be at about 75% when I hit play again later. I also suspect it is ignoring the headphone level safety settings (which I always keep at the lowest setting of 75dB).

Anyone else experiencing this? I reset the APM and have rebooted my iPhone. I also just installed the 16.1 beta but no fix there. I am not seeing this behavior with my Airpods Pro.

Has anyone found a fix for this? Mine also began to exhibit this problem, except I don't even have to take them off for that long to recreate this issue.

I've been listening to music this afternoon on my MacBook Air M1 (running Monterey 12.4) via my AirPods Max. I take off the headphones for 10 seconds, put them back on (the music doesn't autoplay), when I hit the play button on the MBA, the music is super loud! So annoying!

Haven't had this happen to me, I use my Max's for several hours every single day. On iOS 16 since release on my phone. I use the Max's with my phone, iPad, MBP and MBA throughout the day.
