Since my MBP plays both PAL and NTSC, I would like to know how to see in which system each DVD was actually recorded. The reason is that I am invloved in a film festival and have to classify the entries depending on how they were recorded for future playing and conversion. Thank you very very much
I haven't actually bought an Apple yet, and am only in the stages of research, so I'm not necessarily talking from an informed use of hardware.
Having said that, here are some things I can think of:
- Take notice of the countries that the DVD's you acquire come from: USA and Japan will be NTSC (and Canada); Much of Europe, and Australia (and I'm guessing New Zealand) are PAL; France is Mes-Secam, I think.
- Ask the people who you get the DVD's from
- Look around in the software that you have for 'export' options; my guess is that if there is such an option, it will read the DVD you already have and display its format prior to letting you export
- If you're involved in a film festival, then you will have to have multisystem playback capabilities, so the equipment should tell you what format the DVD's are in
- Entrants to the festival should have printed the format somewhere on the DVD or the packaging; the organizers should have made this a requirement
- Do a search on this forum and you may see some other useful posts (hoping that this is useful to you)
- As someone else said when I did a search here on export PAL, bear in mind that conversion will crop a bit of the image. I think that this is true for straight playback, too
