Having another model with a different resolution is going to be headache for future app developers. I can understand the need to get a cheaper phone to attract new customers, but this may be desperation on Palm's part to keep whatever momentum it had.

not sure, as far as the OS itself is concerned, everything seems fully scalable. There might be builtin mechanism that scale the drawing on screen. We will have to see on that.

I'd be curious to hear from someone who knows if WebOS provides such mechanisms -- it would definitely help my perception.

The other issue is why Palm would choose to go compete in a market of lower priced phones? It's not like Palm has a secure position in the market and can afford to go after volumes of lower margin customers. If anything, I would have expected them to come out with a "premium" Pre to address "software rocks, hardware sucks" reviews and to further attract more iPhone-type (read: profitable) customers.

if palm wants to retire its classic phones entirely and terminate the extra expense, it does need to supply corresponding WebOS devices at all price points.

Another Sprint phone?

Boring

Although other then lack of Wi-Fi, I'd be all over it(if it was unlocked or AT&T)

i kinda think pixi probably has shorter exclusive period with Sprint, so it might be actually the first WebOS device outside Sprint.

I hope...Palm would be sell suited to use their press while they have it to get NAM GSM users on board

Daring Fireball summed it up so: smaller and slower.

EDIT: Hey clevin, did you see Leonard Lin's review of the Pre?:
Palm Pre: Two Months In
Seems pretty balanced in the pros and cons.

i will take a read of both later, i need to run some errands now. later :D

Okay. I read it.

I wouldn't call it balanced, but I would call it honest.

The reason is simple, there are many personal stuff in there, something he feels bad, may not be important to others, something he feels very good, may not apply to others. Something he doesn't even feel the neccessity to mention, maybe very important to others.

Its just tooo far away from conprehensive.

I would call it both. He neither comes across as a Pre-fanboy or a Pre-hater. He presents both advantages and disadvantages to the Pre (and its competitors). He seems very level-headed; hence the term "balanced".

I guess you and I have different definitions of what "review" means. I think what you are looking for I would call "tech specs".

lol, i dont think so.

for example

his positive: great coverage
Numerous people have problem with sprint's coverage (not to say ATT is any better for them)

his negative: pathetic google maps, really? at least I didn't hear much complaint about it on treocentral forum.

his negative: battery life, depending on your usage, there are numerous praises at treocentral for better battery life

etc, etc

not to mention, for me,

have AIM connected 24/7 while doing everything else.
Automatic email checking with subtle notification, it tells you the sender and title without asking you go into the app.
connect the Pre as a mass storage device
multitasking across apps
massive savings, free navigation, etc

are all so important that can not be countered by a so called "weak google map".

You can do a reading of any major review sites, engadget, gizmodo, usatoday, nytimes, etc, any of the reviews there are trying very hard to cover every aspect from a lot of angles.

Thats why I think that guys's review is way too far from a balanced review. he just honestly described how he has been using it, that doesn't mean his usage habit can allow him to make a fair judgment of the pre for others.

You discount his personal perspective on a number of components and then turn around and talk about your own. Hypocritical, much?

True. And this piece is just another angle. And you would have to be pretty silly to not consider other sources for reviews and base your entire opinion of the Pre on this single review.

Thats why I think that guys's review is way too far from a balanced review. he just honestly described how he has been using it, that doesn't mean his usage habit can allow him to make a fair judgment of the pre for others.
Neither can yours. Just because you disagree with parts of his review you have discounted his entire opinion. Maybe I need to do the same with yours.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8900/4.6.1.231 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

I kind of the look the pixi. It has the touch screen and pretty nice keyboard.
The thing that I did not like about the pre was it was kind of thick. The only thing that makes me kind of wonder about the pixi is it seems kind of long.I would like to see it compared side by side with a blackberry or something as well

of course, except I never claim that my opinions are balanced and can represent how most people should judge the Pre. did I?

same goes with his opinion, I dont ask you to take my opinion as universally true, but you shouldn't take his opinions as universally true neither.

I reckon it looks pretty nice. Watched some stuff on engadget about it yesterday. Hopefully it will make it to Aus and be of a reasonable price to make it a consideration :).

Yes, I did say I found his review/opinion balanced. That's more than I can say about most of the opinions you post on these forums.

...and can represent how most people should judge the Pre. did I?
But this I never claimed.

Thank God for that! ;)

I never said I did. In fact, I think I said it would be "silly" to not consider other sources for reviews.

irony?

I sense that you are less interested in discussion the information regarding OP, and more about what I like about Pre or not, even stretch the topic to totally unrelated subject, such as my free speech about something thousands of miles away from this discussion.

Bottom line, I used a Pre for 3 months, you haven't, I don't really care whatever certified apple fan likes to agree or disagree about my phone neither.:p

Personally I found it far from balanced. Same as the android review it just went on and on how the iPhone did everything better. It seem to not even try to point out any of the good things in it.

It mostly only had negative comments in it.

Nope, not at all. Balanced review != universally true. Two totally different concepts. Therefore, no irony at all.

Anyways, I think we're done here.

It seem to not even try to point out any of the good things in it.
So, I must be imagining that he said the following positive things?:
Reception: ...I’ve been extremely happy – it’s an amazingly huge improvement over my AT&T service...

Performance – ...When it’s working well, it’s really quite nice...

Other UI: ...I remain impressed w/ the cards implementation, and the notifications just plain rock... ...This is how it’s supposed to work people!...

Apps: ...and yes, a great tethering app...

...I’ve been mostly satisfied with my Pre...

...despite Schiller’s outreach, the the App Store really is abominable, not just in its practice/actuality, but also, after having given it some thought, and reflecting on its implications, as a general model...
I think you and clevin have such strong dislike of Apple you are blind to such things.

No I do not hate apple products but you had to dig for those comments. It is easy t pass over them with Bash this and that in that entire thing.

You found a hand full of lines that I missed but I could post 70-80% of the article bashing the thing.

Go read the andriod one as well. It tainted pretty badly with iPhone love.

While it could be true on many it still just covered in iPhone love.

I don't feel I had to but if that's what you want to believe...

It is easy t pass over them with Bash this and that in that entire thing.
Easy to pass over if you are just scanning the article and focusing on the bashing. I read the entire thing carefully and although there is more negative than positive, there is enough of both that I was glad to see a personal review that wasn't all Pre-love or all Pre-hate.

While it could be true on many it still just covered in iPhone love.
Your perception != my perception. 'Nuff said.

Oh, forgot to comment on this:
Bottom line, I used a Pre for 3 months, you haven't
And you know this how?

P.S. Currently investigating porting CraigsHarvest to webOS.

lol, claiming yourself writing an app, and that proves you used a pre as a phone, like normal phone users would, for 3 months? Which part of investigating of a possibility of porting an app equals to using a phone in real life?

PS. back to topix, think I should mention Pixi is thinnest smartphone in the market, yep, thinner than iPhone 3GS.
