I've had my Macbook since last September and everything has been great with it... but today I was just using it, and the palm rest randomly cracked! The part where the palm rest meets the rest of the computer just broke and it's hanging on by a thread. :( Will Apple replace this? I'm thinking of taking it to the Apple 5th Avenue Store... can they replace it on site? I can't imagine living without my Macbook for a while

The computer has about three months left on its Applecare FWIW.

Ummm...I'm not really sure. It would probably be hard to prove to Apple that you didn't just drop it or something...Unless you do some research & find that this is a common problem. Good luck man! Let us know how it goes...

I think this specific problem is being taken on a case by case basis... and most of the time they're saying they'll go ahead and fix it. (I THINK)... anyway, worth a shot.

Actually, if you search, this is a relatively common problem. It appears to have something to do with where the lid hits the palm rest when its closed. I'd say you've got a decent chance of them fixing it, but it probably won't happen on-site. If they deny you the first time, print out some other people's complaints about it and try the soho store.

while I use this as a palm rest just about 100% of the time, it should be noted this is technically not what it is meant for. that said, i wish they would make it more comfortable to place my palms on, after a while the heat and rubbing of metal hurts, a lot! this might sound crazy, but there are times I will place a bit of my down comforter on the area we are talking about so it does not hurt, and I do an ok job of not blocking the air vents.

I am not really expecting apple or any other company to do this, but it would be nice if ergonomic considerations were better taken into account on notebooks since people use them more and more. the wrist are and support for it is a classic example of this being ignored.

I think I'm gonna have to send it in... the palm rest is cracked, the Superdrive won't read discs at all and to top it all off, the screen is flickering again

Should I send it in to Apple or bring it to the store? Which way is best?

Edit: I made a reservation at the Apple Store on 5th Avenue for this Saturday... hopefully I can get a repair done.

Question though: I added in a 1gb stick of RAM a long time ago... should I remove it before I bring it to the store?
