Panels in the 09 iMac's?

Hi there,

I'm sorry if this have been asked before... But since we not too long ago saw new iMac's being introduced, can anyone confirm which type of panels that are used in them?

LG I guess is a given... but.. is it i H-IPS og S-IPS? Or another type?


The only information and threads I could find about this on google was dated back to '07...

Consensus is the 24" uses H-IPS and the 20" is still using TN.

Yep, agree with you there. And to me the difference is apparent. Since I've never seen an MVA next to a TN only a TN next to an IPS, I can't really say for sure. But they are different quality screens.

I believe the white 24" iMacs had mixed panels of IPS and MVA variety, so any difference won't be noticeable. Some professional monitors use MVA so both are high quality panels.

I think I read somewhere that color reproduction is slightly better on the IPS panels but the major difference was the refresh rates on the MVAs. So slow that they would most likely not work for any type of significant gaming.

Looked it up:

Mid_2007 24" iMac: LG.Philips LM240WU2-SLB1, *-IPS, 8-bit
Late_2006 24" iMac: LG.Philips LM240WU2-SLA1, *-IPS, 8-bit
Mid_2007 20" iMac: LG.Philips LM201WE3-????, TN Film, 6-bit
Late_2006 20" iMac: Samsung LTM201M1-????, S-PVA, 8-bit

Guess I confused 24" with 20", but wide viewing angles are properties of IPS, PVA and MVA, unlike TN Film.

* Manufacturer doesn't say what's the difference between SLB1 and SLA1, but consensus is current 24" uses H-IPS given that black background doesn't display purple hue at extreme angles (unlike S-IPS). There are several threads on this already.
