Here you are. Took me a while to track this down and grab it.

This is 7B85 on my 933MHz G4 tower.

I apologize in advance for the multiple posts.

I will take requests if you all want to see a specific feature.

i'm under the impression that there is a built-in feature that lets you lock/encrypt your home directory. is there anything similar that lets you just do that to a folder of your choice (other than the home directory)?

I dont believe that locking individual folders can be done. I know of programs that can lock volumes, but not individual folders. Put things that need to be secure in your documents folder, so they are safe once you lock your home folder.

Yeah I got 7b85 running too, seems pretty nice and fast.

Pretty: Yes.
Nice: Quite.
Fast: Oh yeah!

This seriously kills Windows XP, I think Jaguar did from the start but this is simply incredible and surpaces Mac OS 9 for balls out speed

Are you serious? The GUI is actually faster than that of OS 9? If so, that's amazing!

yes, it actually is. Windows open pretty much instantaniously and so do system apps like the apple system profiler.

It is... insane.

wait wait wait... Panther feels fast than OS 9?

I was just on my old computer (dual 450) that had OS 9 and it felt alittle snappier than OSX running on my Dual 1.25.

If this is true, I'm gonna try and be first in line for Panther's release....

Although I am spoiled hardware wise (Dual 867 and 867 PBook) I have to agree with G5orbust, it is faster than OS 9 which I am sure is due to the better quartz extreme.

I have not been able to bog down my builds (having 15 apps open including developer work) and the OS just keeps on charging. I admit though, I do not have 7B85, only 68.

Mj,

The performance only gets better as the builds get higher... or so I hear.

offtopic: since when was my thread "panthe pics(7B85)"? Time to fix that.

I too admit I'm a bit spoiled with hardware (dual 1.25 with GF4 Ti Card & TiBook 800), but I felt that OSX could be faster. It definitely wasnt as fast as OS9. What changed between Jaguar and Panther? Better code for Quartz? (forgive me, I know nothing of programing...). Could we expect the OS to keep getting faster as code gets more streamlined? If so, I'm onboard for many years to come.

Hell, what am I talking about? I'll be with Apple forever.

maybe they don't put 'FileVault' on a separate button and combined it in the Security section.

everything, to my knowledge, was quite streamlined. This will allow even much older macs (like old, crt imacs with slower G3 procs) to run OSX, where with Jaguar, they could not because Quartz Extreme was a resource hog.

I'm serious, windows and stuff like flicking through tabs in the system prefs are way faster than OS9, so much more smoother.

While I don't doubt that Panther is faster than Jaguar in many respects, I'll believe this "fast as Mac OS 9" stuff when I finally install the release version of Panther and see for myself if it's true. I've heard it too many times, before. (Not that I'm bashing Mac OS X or anything, and I would rather use Mac OS X 10.1 over Mac OS 9, but the speed of Mac OS 9 is going to be hard to reach.)

What are you running Panther on? I'm curious how it would do on a computer like mine.

Do you know what are the technical specifications of FileVault? "AES128" is not sufficient to assess the actual security of encryption.

I'm serious about this, the UI is indeed faster. I'm on a slower computer than you , I have a 700mhz FP iMac with 512mb Ram.

I know people said jaguar was faster than OS9, but really it wasn't
