Panther & IP over Firewire

I was looking through the new Network Utility in Panther, and noticed under the 'Info' tab, that it listed FireWire as a network interface. It also gave it an IP address. Has there been any word that Panther was going to bring IP over FireWire? If I recall, apple only released that for developers for Jaguar. So it looks like now that it might be a 'standard' feature...although while I was messing around I got a kernal panic

Anyone know if that will stay in the final release that shows up in stores??

Nice find.
The fw0 -network interface doesn't seem to show in the Network tab in System Preferences. (ifconfig in the terminal does show it, ofcourse).
Somehow it also gets a "weird" IP address: 144.3.8.0 (?) (in the Network Utility app)
ifconfig states that its IP address is "tunnel inet"
Any ideas?

My guess that errors that you are having while fiddling around with ip over FW settings is due to your lack of FW connectivity to the internet. However this is a good news as firewire will allow a fast server access.

Would that make sense? To connect to a local server into the network via FireWire to give more bandwidth?

Panther was meant to ship with a non-beta version of ipfw (remember the release 6 months ago?).

I have not done any testing...but I have two 85 machines here and I will give it a run down in a bit to see how it goes.

It make a gr8 second ethernet port on iMacs for example. Also it is gr8 for home networking, for it is easy to use, and very fast!
I have tried it between two G4's (with Gigabit ethernet... ), and it works perfectly. But it never made "final' status... always Pre-release, only downloadable at the ADC memeber site.
But I would have thought the fw0 interface to have got a Rendezvous IP address: 169.254.xxx.xxx (then again, maybe it only "activates" when a device is connected).
Hope Panther has it built in.

Yes, I thought it was a rahter nice find But I have yet to try anything more with it. I might get a chance this weekend (4 day weekend!) I to had funny IP adress, I don't remember exactly what it was, but it was something along the lines of 10.x.x.x strange.

A 10.xxx.xxx.xxx IP address would sound logical, as this range is "reserved" for private newtworking. Just like 192.168.xxx.xxx

Still I would imagine Apple (making life as easy as possible) would do the Rendezvous thing on IP over FireWire.

Oh well... lets wait for the final version, and also connect another Mac via FireWire, and then test

Well, it's definitely there in 10.3. I searched 'Mac Help' for firewire and 2 of the results were 'Using IP over FireWire' and 'Transferring files between two computers using FireWire (although this just may be Target Disk Mode)'. However, it woldnt let me read those files. I would try it out, but I dont currently have a second machine I am willing to test 10.3 out on.

i noticed this too. an arin search on 144.3.8.0 seems to suggest that it's owned by the army out of hanover, nh.
