Panther Preview avaliable on the net - problems however!

What i thought was stupid that Panther Preview was only avaliable to those who atteneded the WWDC, if we've paid to get these macs shouldn't we all be able to sample whats to come?

However, once downloaded, it comes in 2 .img files (containing the data for the 2 cds) now when you open these and the volumes are mounted on the desktop, you can click 'Install OSX" like you do with a normal OSX Install disc, but just doing it out of the mounted volume doesn't work, and burning the files to disc doesn't work either! Can someone please instruct me on how to solve this, or give it a go! The only outcomes would be nothing, or a nice shiny preview
 
i just burned the disk with the "Disk Copy" utility but after i installed it all i am questioning where that utility exactly went in Panther but o well i guess. Anyway just burn the disk image with "Disk Copy" then run the cd just like a regular install

Ironically i never thought of that! I've been using all kinds, Toast, Finder even transferring the files to a pc and using Nero. I'll be back asap with an update.
 
ohoh

you should lock your img-files right after you extract them..because they get modified when you mount them..then burn them with disk copy..should work fine..

Thats an urban legend IMO. Except for maybe getting a harmless .DS_store, nothing else gets "modified" if you mount it before burning it.
 
dude if you didn't know what to do with those two .img files then why on earth do you want to use panther?!
it's a frigging beta, it was only meant for developers and if you really can't figure out how to install it don't use it!

btw panther doesn't have disk copy and toast doesn't work in panther so don't use it to burn cd's

From personal experience, I have to disagree. If the image file is mounted before you burn it AND it's a bootable image, you'll have problems. If it's not a bootable image, then it's not an issue.

Make sure you do a clean install, not an upgrade install. Upgrades to Jaguar seem to bring out a bunch of bugs.

I've had varying success with third party apps; do not assume they will work. Virtual PC 6 works fine (actually a wee bit snappier), but WindowShadeX doesn't work at all.

BTW, I have a legal set of Developer CDs that received via my ADC Select membership, so please don't flame me about bootlegging Panther.

The GM should be out in mid-September and it's going to be sweet!
 
I have a LaCie 120 GB hard disk at work, so I figured I'd back up my Home directory and all of my applications. I'm going to go ahead and try Panther out as a primary OS and see if it seems to work OK with other stuff. If I have to reformat and clean re-install Jaguar, it's not a big deal to me.

Would it be worth it to also copy the Library and System folders from my main hard disk so I don't have to bother with re-downloading software updates and all that? That would basically amount to copying pretty much my entire hard disk.

Does this sound like a good/bad idea to everybody?

If you have an extra disk, why not just clone your Jaguar install onto the FW drive for backup and install Panther? If you ned Jag, you can boot up the FW drive. If you need to blow Panther away, you can clone your internal disk from the FW backup. There's a decent disk cloner out there, but I forget the name. I know it's here in the forum archives somewhere.

CarbonCopyCloner does this.

Seriously tho, you need to consider how long it takes Apple to get their software up to snuff... so this could be a really bad experience for you. There are a few steps where you could damage your data.

That said, I'm looking forward to trying Multiple Graphical Logons myself :)

It's apparently inside Disk Utility now (from memory, I didn't download it)

Actually, some of it is in Disk Utility, the rest is built into Finder (mounting images).

Another person who doesn't know what they are talking about -- the file is for BIT-TORRENT, you need THAT to get Panther.

Told you people! You never listen, now after I post this 2 Mods will Come in and post Back2Back like in previously locked thread, It ALWAYS happens like that.

BTW, Rower Panther needs no serials so therefore no problem.

Anyone who doesn't know Bit-Torrent and or how to burn the images should:
a) Smack themselves
b) not install it -- if you don't know how to do those things you don't deserve it and you will totally screw up your comp.
 
Rower's got a good point though. I was getting ready to set up the download but I had an opportunity to stop and think about it (I needed to use the can), so I thought about it. I'm doing fine with Jaguar right now, so why bother spending five hours downloading a preview release of Panther? Then I have to deal with my conscience telling me I have illegal stuff on my comp (My conscience speaks VERY loudly), so I decided not to do it. I'll just continue salivating over screenshots like everybody else.

I was going to download Panther from BT, but I stopped and thought about it. I thought about how I totally screwed up my system by installing one of those unreleased Safari betas. I realised that an OS could cause a whole lot more damage than a web browser. Needless to say, I'm waiting (im)patiently for Panther's official release. I heard a rumour saying it was coming out on 16 September? I'm looking forward to network browsing, Samba printing, user switching, and of course, Exposé :)

Hummm ... I did have problems getting my Win2k image to start, but that turned out to be due to having "saved state" on the image, rather than shutting it down, before I copied it over to panther. Once I shut down the PC image under Jag and copied it back over to Panther, it came up fine.

There was another post yesterday or the day before that also indicated that VPC was running well under Panther.

Did you start with a clean home directory? I've found that old plist files can trip Panther up.

It doesn't really matter if people download Panther because it will expire on 1st Jan 2004. Also the Panther still has a lot of bugs in it so it can't be used to replace 10.1 or 10.2 yet.
 
It does matter if people are downloading illegal copies of it, regardless of when it expires, because it's illegal. That's sorta how laws work.. it doesn't matter if you agree with them. By your argument, it is ok to kill you, because you are going to die anyway.

Ever consider becoming an attorney? Seriously though, best argument I've ever seen against warez and bootleg songs.
