Does anyone out there know when "Panther" is supposed to be released ??

I have a Beige G3 (running at 533 Mhz) running OS 9.2.1 and am "chompin' at the bit" to get OS X. If Panther is going to be released within the next 3-4 weeks, then I'll wait for that. However, if it's going to be longer than that, I'll just go and get a copy of Jaguar right now because I can't wait any longer than 3-4 weeks.

So, what's the feedback on this people ??

Does your G3 have USB? Many have said that Panther does not run on the original G3s or pre-USB systems. Maybe that'd help you decide if you'd rather go wit Jaguar instead.

I hope you at least maxxed out the ram when you upgraded the processor in that beige G3. Even though Panther is supposed to be faster than Jaguar, I wouldn't doubt the system requirements haven't stayed the same or have gone up a bit.

I have an "Orange Link +" Firewire/ USB 2.0- PCI card and a Maxtor 80 Gb ATA 133 Hard Drive w/ the "8 Mb cache." Will Panther run on that........or does the computer need to be natively USB and Firewire ?? Does someone know for sure about that ??

If that's the case, I assume that the "Blue & White" G3 is the oldest machine that Panther will run on ??

I don't know for sure, but someone from the ADC using Panther said all beige G3s were dropped and that only native USB and above models were supported. Whether or not this will be the case with the GM version or if it was just "recommended", I can't say. Perhaps someone else can add some input. If this is true, then you might as well get Jaguar instead of waiting another month and enjoy OS X now instead of later.

Yeah, the ram is maxed out at 768 Mb. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if the system requirements went up a little bit for Panther. However, what programs might not work in Panther that worked in Jaguar ??

With so many different enhancements to Panther, I'm sure there are some programs that won't work right and will need an update to work in Panther.......which programs that might be remains to be seen.

Maybe I should just go and buy a used "Blue & White" G3 for $400.......that way it will be assured to run Panther (Hopefully ?). However, if I do that, I'll have to get a "serial to USB" adapter for my Printers ( I do alot of graphics for Print).

Decisions, Decisions.

i've been wondering about panther too...
i was wondering if the rumored iWorks and Document are released too, would they be bundled with Panther or would they be seperate products?

reality

Just a quick question, when Panther does come out, what will the cost likely be? And will there be student discounts and multiple license discounts like there is for Office X?

Duff-Man says....make that *probably* - until Apple officially announces the shipping date and price(s), what you see here is just guesses based on what apple has done in the past. When the official word comes down, you can bet you will easily find your answer at www.apple.com.....oh yeah!

you are out of luck my friend. your machine will not be supported. also toast 5 does work in panther. it just didnt work in the first zillion seeds.

Duff-man says....make the *officailly* supported by Apple....Panther *may* still work on your ol' beige but you may not have full functionality and may need a 3rd party util to get it to install...like XpostFacto ...oh yeah!

If that's the case, I won't bother trying. It's getting to the point where I've had enough of this "Work-Around" crap !! Guess I'll just have to find a way to scrounge up enough Dough for a G4 of some kind (used or new).

I don't rightly remember where I read it, but I did read that Panther will be compatible only with machines with built-in USB (PCI or other cards don't count), meaning that the Beige G3 is not supported.

This is not exactly staying on topic but I am a newbie thinking to buy a Mac PB 1.25Ghz / G5 PM

What is the exact advantage of having Panther running in those systems ?
