can i use my Parallels hdd to boot into Boot Camp, or does it only work the other way around?

You can make a boot camp partition and then have parallels use that to run windows in mac os x. I tried it but it always got corrupted (3x). Hopefully they've fixed the bugs by now but be careful.

That allows you to run Windows

Parallels or VMWare can run Windows from your Boot Camp partition

Either works fine
