I bought a HP laptop last week to use alongside my MacBook Pro for work stuff. It's a long story but the hard drive in it started to make a loud noise and I returned it. The company said they couldn't find a fault and were going to charge me for sending it back so I requested and successfully obtained a refund.

I've been debating whether or not to look around and go buy another laptop. I read some official reviews on Parallels 4 which is just out. I know VMware Fusion inside out and tbh I wasn't overly impressed with its performance which made me think of buying a dedicated machine for Windows.

Anyway I downloaded the Parallels Desktop 4 trial. Install took seconds then it asked me to pop in my XP Professional SP3 disc. That took around 15 minutes for Windows to install then Parallels to install its Tools.

With this version it really feels like I'm using another machine- it's that fast. Everything is so quick and robust. I installed Office 2007 from disc and that also goes rapid. Even in Coherence mode it flies.

It's using less memory and resources and only one processor core compared to my VMware which uses more and two processor cores.

If you haven't already tried it I recommend you do and see for yourself. You can get the free trial for 30 days to test it out. I'm thoroughly impressed with this latest version and I'm looking forward to using it side by side with my Mac at such great speed. My Mac is now complete. :apple::)

Glad to hear you like Parallels 4. I have 3 and was about to download 4 when a post on this forum stated that 4 "was not ready for prime time" and to check the Parallels forum. The forum was loaded with complaints with some suggesting to wait for 4.1. My 3 has had a few hiccups so I was looking forward to 4, but I now plan to wait until the Parallels 4 dust settles.

4.0 is a little unstable and buggy, so yeah, you need to wait for 4.1. I'm currently reviewing the 4.0 version and I must say it is faaaast. Unlike any other virtualisation app I've used. iMac 2Ghz Core Duo with 2GB RAM and it handles XP amazingly well.
