Is this a Parallels' problem or is it me? I loaded Windows Word 2000 documents from my old PC onto my new Mac running Parallels/XP Pro. I planned to be 90% Mac and use Windows sparingly. I did not have Word installed on the XP side since I expected Pages to display the Word docs with little change. However, Pages does a lousy job interpreting heavily formatted Word docs. So, I purchased and installed Word 2007 on the XP side to use for future word processing. Now, opening a Word created doc on the Mac side causes parallels to open it in the newly installed Word program. Great! I can now view my old Word docs in their original format.
The problem is that Parallels only opens the Windows Word program and not the Windows OS. When the program is closed, parallels remains open with only an outline of where the Windows desktop would appear and with no Windows icons. Closing Parallels and reopening does not display the Windows desktop. Restarting the Mac is the only way I found to get Windows back. Did I do something wrong?
I solved having this problem reoccur by loading all my old PC docs to the XP side and deleting them on the Mac side. In hindsight, I should have planned this at purchase rather than having unrealistic expectations of Pages.
