macOS Parallels or bootcamp for Modelsim/Xilinx

Hi all,

I am an engineering student and need to work with modelsim/xilinx ISE design suite as a part of a class I am taking on HDL/FPGAs. I have a new macbook pro and was wondering if anyone has experience running either of these programs using parallels or bootcamp. I have an old windows laptop that I can work on for the time being but was hoping to ditch it as soon as I can.

I have no experience with running windows on a mac and am new to both modelsim and xilinx. I mentioned I am a student right? The macbook has 16gb ram so running parallels should not be an issue. I think I would prefer this method but will do which ever works best. Any advice? Its a bit of an investment because I will need to purchase parallels AND a version of windows so I am hoping to make sure everything will work before going down either path.

Hi,

I have not recently but for years I used Parallels with Modelsim.
I did quite a bit of Verilog development on a Macbook Pro running Modelsim under Parallels.

It does work.

When I had to use Xilinx for FPGA development in school I used Bootcamp; however, a student in my class was using Vmware Fusion. It seemed to work for him but he did have occasional issues with the USB connection to the FPGA board. This was about 3 years ago.
