I bought a new Mac a few days ago but I was running Windows XP via Parallels on my old MBP. I really don't want to go through the process of reinstalling Parallels, XP, all my software and the updates but would just rather just copy it to my new MBP (something like how Time Machine works).

I googled how to do this but the instructions just said to copy the XP.hdd to my new MBP and import it, but that apparently isn't working for me.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Did you use the Migration Assistant to move your apps to the new machine? If so, the Parallels itself should be installed. The .hdd file should have been contained in a .pvm package. There are some other files which go along the .hdd that contain the configuration information.

Even if all you have is the .hdd, you should be able to recreate the VM. During the setup of a new VM, it will ask if you have an existing virtual hard disk to use. Just skip the "detection" part of the setup and tell it what OS you have.

Copy the entire Parallels Folder in Documents to your new mac.

That would work, if the HDD and/or .pvm reside there (which, is the default). Sometimes, they're stored in custom locations (for instance, my Win7 Beta resides on an external drive, whereas my Win2K is on my internal).

Ok, I managed to startup the virtual machine by just copying the Parallels folder to my new MBP, but now the Internet connection won't work on the virtual machine. I have the settings in XP to share the host's Internet connections and I'm using an Ethernet cable to connect to the Internet. What am I doing wrong?

Your posting on a MacRumors forum, and not the Parallels forum. Just teasing :)
You may as well post on the Parallels forum as well, it's likely they will be able to help better (although it can take a few days).
(I'm assuming you haven't, but you may have already)

What version of Parallels are you using?

I copied my VMs over to my new SSD, opened them with Parallels 4.0 and they just started working.

Kind Regards
