After hearing some negative things about after sales services of Lenovo and MS (e.g. possible long wait time to get the unit back after sending in for repairing, possible receive of a refurbrished unit when repairing is needed on the SB2), my parent want me to buy a MBP2018 rather than a Thinkpad or SB2. What do you think? In Canada, are the after sales services of Lenovo and MS good or bad?

I can't speak for service, but the Lenovo X1 Extreme is a really nice machine. A review can be found here:

If I didn't buy a MBP, I'd probably look to get this.

The MBP is a really nice machine, and its a nice upgrade especially if you're already in the apple ecosystem. If you're looking for a windows machine with great service I think Dell is a nice choice as well.

Lenovo in Canada is HORRIBLE!
I don't know about MS, & Apple is slow, but not really terrible.

After chatting with them for a few months and trying several pre-sale reps, I finally got a very good one. However, nobody knows what will happen in regard to after sales.

One problem with the MBP2018 is that even I can run Ubutun as a virtual machine, doing CUDA computations is not possible since GPU is not recognized and MBP2018 has no Nvidia GPU.

If it's a laptop for YOU, not your parents, why are they deciding for you? If you buy with "positive" after sales service being positive, that is gonna limit you right there.

After hearing those crazy noise fan and touching the very hot MBP 2010 17", they are concerned that the laptop would cause fire. So, they want me to get a new laptop ASAP. As Apple has been serving me well for many years, they just want me to get a MBP and be done with it. Of course, they don't know about my needs such as doing CUDA computations using Nvidia GPU, long battery life, better keyboard, etc.

Then buy an Nvidia equipped laptop. Its not rocket surgery, there's no perfect machine, you buy one that best fits your needs. I don't understand why you're reluctance. Dell, Lenovo, Razer, ASUS, MSI are all very good laptops, just pick one. Don't sweat the small stuff (nothing is perfect after all), and enjoy your new machine.

The bottom line is the 8750H CPU and the Nvidia 1050/1060/1070 (with or without MAX-Q) run hot, there's no way getting around that. You will have some degree of fan noice and varying levels of heat but that's just the state of laptops in 2018. If it were me, right now, I'd probably go with the Lenovo X1 Extreme.

Hmm I can think of many reasons why the parents are deciding for you. Perhaps the person is not yet adult still living with parents or is disabled and not able to make decisions for him or herself.

In the 17 years I’ve owned laptops (only had desktops before) I’ve never needed after sales service on my personal devices, only work ones without admin privileges so I couldn’t apply simple software fixes, so I don’t even think about that when I’m making decisions.

There have been lots of reports about MacBook problems, but far fewer about others - perhaps that’s a filter bubble, perhaps people complain more about Macs which they expect to be perfect, or perhaps Macs need more service.

I did not know that Microsoft or Lenovo had any real customer support.

I once called the Microsoft number and ended up in an indian call-center. They barely understood me and of course couldn’t help with anything.

Apple has actual stores and with me they’ve always been generous and helpful.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I have ordered a X1E with 4K screen, 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD. In Canada, we cannot get 8750H with 4K screen and 1TB SSD. We have to choose 8850H. Hope I will like it. I am considering to buy one more (MBP2018 or X1C6/X1Y3) for comparision.
