I thought that they said that they were trying to not release as much stuff at the big events. So I think that sometime in August or September there will be a special event which will announce the official release date of leopard and also new iMacs shipping when Leopard is released with Leopard preinstalled.

Yeah That!! LOL, I am in the same boat... I'm switching my company to all iMacs, and would have made the jump 3 weeks ago if I didn't know the update was just around the corner. UGH!!

iMac Updates have always been annonced on stage (Big updates G3-G4 G4-G5 ...)

...which is a reason NOT to introduce it at a big event this year.

The past doesn't always have to predict the future. iMac updates have also typically been more frequent then now too....so maybe everything is different this time!

August? get real...
Not only will they not be in stores (come on... in the middle of their big sale?), but their wont be an announcement either. Why would you announce new product two months before your new OS hits the market? That just gives your consumer a reason to wait two months. No company wants to do this.

It would be smart for Apple to announce a new computer 2 months before the Leopard release. Not only will they capture the sales of new computers, but also the sale of their OS two months down the road. If iMacs are released after the new OS, then Apple will be forced to INCLUDE it with the purchase.

I'm thinking along similar lines. If, and I mean IF, the new iMacs are ready to go it would capitalize on the people who will run out and buy a new one knowing they'll "have to" upgrade to Leopard a couple of months down the line. It would also build some momentum for the Mac/OS X side of things.

Who knows, its just wait and see as usual.

But many people will hold out their purchase knowing that a new OS is being released in 2 months! Wouldn't you do that? If we didn't know that Leopard was down along the road then it would be a "good" move, but we know that Leopard is coming.

Exactly my point. New computer bundled with the new OS. Old computer? Well, just buy the OS yourself.

The Paris show is a dead duck with regard to new releases. For the last two years there's been huge hype and nothing has happened. No reason at all to think this will be any different.

Seriously, stop wishing for it now because it's 99.9% not going to happen.

No, I wouldn't wait. As soon as the iMac comes out I'm all over it. It can only help Apple to release it prior to Leopard.

1. Apple could release the new iMac before Leopard. They would have the chance to capitalize on the sales of the iMacs and then the sales on Leopard two months later.

2. Assume the iMac is released before iMac and most people do wait. Not much of a loss. Apple can still take advantage of the people that purchase computers prior to Leopard and then sell the computers to those that choose to wait two months later.

I'm not sure I see the harm in releasing the iMac early.

Not much of a loss from releasing the iMac early? Don't you think that if most people (as you said) wait and don't buy the iMac they intend for two months would not hurt Apple? Don't you think that cannibalizing sales for two months would be "not much of a loss"? Two months sales time is money, and with "most" of the people holding themselves out, then it would not be positive, not a little bit.

The smartest move for Apple is to release it's new hardware with Leopard and use the hype generated for both products to help in the sales of each.

I can't imagine it would hurt their sales any more than selling their currently outdated technology at today's prices for the iMac.

They will bring out new iMacs with Santa Rosa only and more RAM.

The new design should come out with Penryn in MWSF.

I agree they need an event. They may have hardware bits that need Leopard as well. I really hope they just do a two week warning and hold a special event, but I fear I will be hanging on for another 3 months until Leopard.

Can't they release the iMac and give a free Leopard upgrade for when it comes out? Seems like a win-win to me. They get to sell more because people would have no reason to wait for Leopard given they would get it for free...

I can't wait for Leopard, if they don't come out soon I'll have to go to the Dark Side. The current iMac is such a poor value right now spec wise. If they would make 2G standard, the 2.4G chip and the better graphic card for the same price I would get the current model.

Apple stores within Europe now showing a 4 day wait for the standard configuration 24" iMac. Is this a sign they are coming very soon?

disagree

apple had no reason to wait this long for a silent update.

if they were just going to update santa rosa, bump the stock ram/hdd/graphics they would have done it by now, probably alongside MBP's

I agree with superlatic. If they were just upgrading specs it would have been done long before, not almost an entire year.

Also, there's that article that has Jobs quoted as saying "the new macs are mind-blowing" or something along those lines. They aren't his exact words so don't quote me, just the general "mood" of his speech.

the problem they had though was that they didnt really have anything new to update it with untill SR chipsets came out, but nevertheless, if they were just slightly updating the specs to SR then it would have been done no later than WWDC as a silent update after the keynote

Man, I was in an Apple store today jacking around on a 24" iMac, showing my wife iSight, talking about how her parents could buy a Mac and read stories to the kids at night from all the way up in NC. Lady next to me was talking to an Apple sales guy about laptops, feverishly taking notes on everything he said. He walks her a few feet from the laptop display to the iMac display and shows her the 20" iMac. He rolls through the features, differences, selling points, etc. She says, "So this is what? An iMac you said?"

Point being, most people have no clue about Leopard, old models, new models, Santa Rosa, Penryn or whatever the hell that is, computer shows in Paris, or anything else discussed here. If I had to guess, I'd say 80% of the people who walk into an Apple store have no clue that the smart money is waiting a little bit for the redesign. They see it, they like it, they buy it. The more they buy, the quicker the new one comes out.

Most people don't have a friggin' clue that they might be buying 1 year old technology. Just us. And those of us waiting for the new model should have no problem with the unaware buying iMac's right now. Cuz the fewer they have left, the quicker new ones show up. Business 101. Supply and demand.
