I just ordered a MacBook this morning and went in to my account to view my order status.
I got this message;

Thank you for shopping at the Apple Online Store
Apple's Online and phone Order Status services are temporarily unavailable due to a scheduled upgrade to our systems.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

Is this routine, or is something going on in the background, like updating the order system before the store gets updated?

(Not that I'm one to start rumours or anything, but so many of you seemed so disappointed yesterday)

It's interesting. Could very well be just routine maintenance after last night's debacle but in the past it's been the "back stage" stuff that goes down early before the European, then Asian and finally North American online stores.

Will have to keep an eye on things but it's probably just maintenance.

I agree with Chundles the order status is normally the first to go down in the UK before they bring the main store down. However I also agree that it may just be maintenance. I can confirm that the Order status is also down in the UK.

Happened last week too (at least in the UK).

Perhaps they are changing the order status for so many Mac Pros that they've had to take the order status part of the store down.

Just checked out the apple site. Looks like macbook est. shipping times have been reduced to 1-3 days for stock set up...hmmmmmmm..no merom in those I bet

Maybe Apple is trying to get rid of the "next tuesday" mentality, they are now going to arbitarily update products on any day!

Going to agree nothing is going on - there's no event scheduled, and it's been down since I got up this morning (5am).

I'm guessing it's an overhaul, either backend or frontend - maybe both. To be honest, given Apple's current system, it could do with a revamp.

I could be wrong, though. I'm also thinking they might be altering the system to cope with more orders. Sales have gone up since the Intel transition, and I know that they had some trouble finding orders and processing them after they switch ed from W7xxxxxxx orders to W8xxxxxxx orders.

MacBooks appear to have 7 days shipping time in the UK now...

Why? There's nothing to suggest that. There's even an event scheduled for next week!

Besides which, it makes sense for Apple to keep updates expected and "special". They don't have so huge of a line as Dell etc do, so Apple really needs to keep their updates at the front of the media.

And they're very good at it, too - they generate HUGE amounts of publicity from doing very little. Even inviting a few journalists to London will bounce around the net for free.

5-7 day ship time for macbooks in the US store. MBPs are 24 hours and iMacs are 1-2 days.

Why would they just update the Macbooks and leave MBPs untouched?

I find it hard to believe that MB would get Merom before MBP unless there's another Apple event to reveal Merom MBPs, possibly with the rumored new enclosure.

Is there anything ahead? I wouldn't read too much into them otherwise.

What have the MB's shipping times been like recently? From what's been rumbling around the web, Apple's supply of these has been a little short due to demand. Could this just be a reflection of that?

That's what I'm guessing. My friend has tried to get one in London AND on his trip over to the US just recently, and had to order it. And we all know that sales have gone up since the Intel transition.

Yeah I just went to check on my refurb macbook and the order status thing is down for routine maintenance...

i think a lot of the supply is being taken up by all the back-to-schoolers.

It's actually quite saddening it's been down for so long. It's been down since I woke up at 5am, and it's now noon-thirty - that's 7 hours!

It's also some bizarre form of torture, since my Mac Pro shipped yesterday. I want my tracking numbers!

They are down because they run MacOS, nuff said :D

If they run some real robust Linux solution it will be 100% uptime!

But they're not actually down... oh, I guess that was meant to be a joke.

Oh come on, release that damn MBP already! :D

US store isn't down. Doubt it's an update for us only...

I haven't been able to check my order status since last night :( The order wasn't placed under my e-mail address so I don't even know if it shipped yet

And I spotted it first!

I feel so proud.

Now to look at these iMacs and see if it''s worthwhile cancelling my macbook order.
