So I work at this really cruddy job. The pay is not that great (no raise in 3 years) and they treat their employees like an Nazi shoe factory. I really decided I wanted to work for Apple corporate eventually so applied at my local Apple store. I am on my fourth interview and it is looking really promising but I'm not sure if it is worth giving up benefits and full time for the HOPE of advancement (which my company says will never be possible where I am).

What would you do?

honest opinion?

an Apple store is just retail. you'll work retail hours, meaning you come in at least an hour before store opening to get ready and stay at least an hour later after closing. you'll deal with the typical retail related headaches in customer service and treatment of employees.

as far as i know, the quickest way to get into Apple corporate is through college campus recruiting. retail people rarely jump into the corporate side of things no matter what the hiring manager says. it goes for clothing retail, department stores, banks, and yes... probably even Apple. frankly, most people end up hating retail jobs.

if you're applying to Apple retail cause you're hoping someday you'll make your way into their offices over in Cupertino... i'd say no.

if you're applying just because you want to work there then i'd say go for it.

Just find any other, better job that matches your benefits and current salary.

The way into Apple corporate is not through Apple retail.

As an educator, my advice would be to search to find what Apple's corporate needs will be a couple years out and study in that area. If you can forecast a need and then provide a way to fill it you will be more marketable to Apple or whatever field you choose to be in. Good luck with your future endeavors.

Relating to this thread, what typical qualities/CV content do you think Apple would look for to be employed in their retail sector?

Prior sales experience if you want to be a Specialist, certifications and prior experience for a Genius, and prior experience for a management position.

From what I understand, they like to promote from within for Genius positions. Seems they would rather send you to Cupertino for the training knowing that they have already indoctrinated you.

It is interesting how Apple hires. In some cases they prefer inside talent and in other cases they prefer external hires (and pay them more).

I can tell you this, I would rather not work for Apple knowing how they operate. There are better ventures out there in my opinion.
