I have a current hard drive using it for time machine. if I partition it to also use it as a file storage drive will it erase my current time machine backups?

I have a new rMB coming and plan on using the external HD as file storage but want to have a few time machine backups. I don't intent to use the time machine for the new machine. I want to start fresh and not from my current MBP.

thanks

If you have sufficient free space on the disk, you can add a partition to the disk. Disk Utilities will resize the existing partition and not hurt your backups.
