Is it a good idea to partition a hard drive for running os x 10.3.9?(panther) Right now I have a 25gb partition for the system programs, and the rest (about 250gb) for video, and other files. Or should I just make it all one big drive?

I would have OS X on a partition of its own - that way your video files (and others) are not getting mixed up with the operating system.

One of the great reasons to create multiple partitons and install the OS on one partiton is that if you're enduring problems, or want to upgrade you can simply erase that partiton without having to backup your data files which are placed on the other partition.

Ok, well I now have an 80gb hard drive for the system. And a 300gb drive for video. I am using Mac OS X (journalled) file system. Does that sound ok? I can still change it since I don't have any important data yet.

Sounds great.

Keep the system drive journaled as this also takes care of fragmentation.
You can consider un-journaling the drive on which the video data is stored.

Here's a good read about HFS+ Journaling (used for Mac OS X): Linky dinky
