Passcode keeps being asked to enable FaceID

Brand new iPhone 16 Pro. For some reason I noticed that unlocking keeps asking for my passcode “to enable FaceID”. Without even trying FaceID first…. This is completely random, sometimes multiple times an hour or every other hour….

Any ideas?! Typing a passcode in public is far more dangerous than FaceID…
