Hi all,

I'm attempting to play movies files (yes, legal files) from my Mac to my TV, using an external audio system, Sonos, using 5.1 Audio.

Firstly, yes the file does support 5.1.

However, whenever i play the file through to my TV, the Sonos speaker settings are picking up 2.0.... ( Im using one of those USB C to HDMI converters to connect to TV via HDMI).

The quality is terrible and speech is quite bad compared to listening directly on the Macbook Air.

Is the problem with laptop settings? I've gone onto the Audio settings and changed output to surround 5.1, still nothing.

Or could the problem be with the TV passing the signal to the Sonos? (It's a Sony Bravia, 17 or 18 model i cant remember) Is there a way to fix this?

Also, im using VLC media player to play the file.

If someone could help me fix this id be forever grateful!

Neel

If the MacBook is the source, then how are you connecting it to the rest of the system?

Also, what year MBA?
Not sure if you missed it in the read, but im connected via USB C to HDMI CONVERTER, where i then use a standard HDMI to connect to the converter and TV.

The MBA is 2020 model.

In terms of sound to Sonos, its connected to the TV's HDMI ARC port.

So i get 5.1 whenever is use apps such as prime and netflix through the TV, also through Sky.

Which also makes me think, if the Sky can passthrough the 5.1 audio whilst being connected to a seperate HDMI port, why cant the MBA? Makes me think its not the TV but the laptop, but im not sure...
