Hi, My father in law is 96 and has been playing with the settings on his iPad. He has a history of playing with settings and forgetting passwords despite writing them down.

His finger print is now being rejected. It seems he may have changes his password. He has given me what he claimed was his current password.

1st attempt got a 1hr time out. 2 attempt got a 3hr time out.

When he changed his password did that void the stored finger prints ?

Any suggestions as to how to overcome this problem gratefully received.

Steve

No, changing the passcode doesn't void stored fingerprints.

Make sure the button is clean. Also, Touch ID can be finicky when the skin gets drier in the fall/winter. Try it again after washing hands and/or using lotion.

If you still can't get in, you'll need to put the device in recovery mode to restore iOS and restore a backup if you have one.

If you do get back in, I'd suggest registering some more fingers with Touch ID if you aren't already. It can store up to 10 fingers. If one fingerprint ends up not working, another one should (hopefully).
