Can anyone explain how these programs work? How do you get into a website for example using such a program? Is it easy to change passwords when there is an issue? Are there any reasonably prices ones that work across all apple devices... iOS and desktop and that do a good job?

I use oneSafe. It's just a manager and doesn't integrate as nice as 1Password does, but I like it that way. I think it's overall much simpler too. I just have it open and copy and paste stuff as needed. You can set it so that after a few minutes, the copied information expires.

I use 1Password for all my IOS and OSX needs. One of the biggest reasons I use it is due to the fact that it syncs so well across all my devices. Very simple to use and can do so much for you. Very easy to change passwords on sites and will generate them for you as well. I have pasted a blurb from AgileBits site in regards to it.

Yeah I just started using 1Password after I heard about this heartbleed stuff. It's free for Mac and apparently the iOS app is on sale for $8.99! It took a while to change all of my passwords, but I did most of the common ones. I didn't use it for my Apple IDs or my bank since I have to log in to those a lot (I've read it's a pain to log in to the app to get your Apple password whenever you download an app). Those passwords are already pretty secure. I used it on the ones that are usually autosaved like Facebook, Twitter, MR, etc.
I used to use the same four or five passwords that had varying degrees of complicatedness. Now all my logins can have a unique password that's pretty secure. All I have to remember is one sentence and two other passwords for things not managed by 1Password.
Just a little correction. It is $24.99 for Mac. Same here, use it for everything but banking info and Apple ID.
Didn't realize there was a 30 day trial. They don't say anything when you click download on the website. Good thing I have 30 days to save up! No point in going back since I paid for the iOS app.
The Mac version is free for up to 20 items, after the 30 days are up if you have more than 20 items it'll go into a read-only mode basically. No data is lost but in order to add more items you will need to purchase the application.
The sale goes through the next week, if you want to take advantage of it do purchase while it's on sale. 30 days from now it'll be back to the normal price of $49.99.

Remember that one of the key things to consider when choosing a password manager is how effective their security encryption is. Some lesser known ones have been busted for using easily crackable methods or even none at all!
Personally I've been a 1Password user for years and it's always been rock solid (and proven by 3rd parties that their encryption is top notch as well). The iOS app works by serving as a password/for your eyes only repository and organizer.
In order to have 1Password autocomplete the login's for you, you have to use their in-app browser, which is actually pretty good. I'm a heavy mobile Safari user so I just copy and paste my passwords into safari myself (my login ID is almost always the same few).
1Password has multiple syncing options and they work consistently. I'm using DropBox so that I can reach my HTML version in case I'm working on another computer heavily (pretty rare). It basically works just like the app if you're away from your machines but it's accessible from your DropBox. It's encrypted and if you use 2-factor authentication for DropBox (if you don't you seriously should) then it's even more protected. The HTML version is a cool option I haven't seen anyone else provide.
I'd highly recommend 1Password. AgileBits has great customer service (as proven above by AGKyle) and they're a fairly small company of great people I'm happy to support.
I find it works best if you have your browser remember passwords or use the add-on in Chrome to copy and paste.

If you mean when I said it was free, I was wrong. I downloaded from their website instead of the App Store and didn't see that it was a 30 day trial.
This depends on your browser settings. If you check the "Remember me" box for many sites it'll stay logged in until you log out. We suggest you don't stay logged in for really sensitive sites, but like anything you must weigh the convenience and the security. I stay logged into sites like MacRumors, but many other sites like my email I log out of at the end of the day. My computer is also protected by File Vault, so I have an extra level of personal computer security as well.
The Mac version is not free, it's $24.99 on sale right now (ends this week sometime) and normally $49.99. That's the single user license, there is also a family pack if you need more than one user. User's are physical people, not computers. A single license could be used on multiple computer's so long as it's only one user that uses it.
Anyone who said it was free was simply confused. It has a free trial that lasts for 30 days. After 30 days you can continue to use it for free up to 20 items. After 20 items it won't let you add more. If after 30 days you have more than 20 items, it'll go into a read-only mode. No data will be lost, but you won't be able to edit the items anymore until you purchase.
