Password Protect Folders

Hey guys, I've tried good ol' Google but I can't find any simple way to password protect some folders I Have on my computer. The thing is, I've got a nephew that comes over regularly and I have some rated R movies and some other things I don't want him to see while he's using my computer so is there anyway to just add a simple password when you try to open that folder?

Also, if there is a way to do this. Do the images in that folders still appear when you click on the purple folder on the left side of the finder window that says "All Images"? Just in case you don't know what I'm talking about I've got a screenshot to show you.

what does he use the computer for? just make him a separate user account.

I'd rather not, I also gave some financial stuff I want under lock down in case the computer gets stolen as well. I'm not one for backing stuff up.

You could always put the files on a password protected DMG image, then just open that whenever you needed it.

I agree that a password protected DMG is a good solution (although I'm not the best person to describe how to do that), but I thought I'd throw this out there in case it's useful - if you don't want to create another user account, there is a "Guest Account" that exists on every Mac. it's simply a temporary account - when the guest logs out, all of the files that are created, and all space it used up simply vanish.

Creating a DMG file with encryption.

Open Disk Utility.

Click on 'New Image' at the top of the window.

Choose the size you need it to be.

Select the encryption type (AES-128 is recommended)

Format - read/write.

Click ok then you will be prompted to make a password.


When you need to access the files, click on the DMG. It will ask for the password then mount a removable drive to your desktop.
