Has anyone else had this happen?
I let my battery drain (unintentionally) and the enter password box came up on the screen (after waiting a minute before the dark screen settled) First, I had a few seconds of various shades of grey/black flickering on the screen.
YIKES... just bought this new macBook after my last one's video card gave up the ghost.
I do not have password protection on this home laptop.
Any one else had this happen?
Obviously, I have recharged enough to get back in and send this.

What's the problem? The battery drained, you recharged it, and restarted the machine normally. It preserved your data. Life's good. It's normal to enter your password when the machine boots.

"Should" not be possible. You can set up an account with automatic login, where the password isn't required - but there "Should" always be a password. There might be ways to circumvent that, but I would not recommend that since macOS expects that there will be one, you could run into problems.
