Urgent: Unexpected Password Visibility Across All Websites

I'm experiencing a concerning security issue and I'm hoping someone here might have encountered it before or can offer some advice.

- When entering or updating passwords on ANY website, the password is being revealed in a yellow bar.
- This happens even when the "eye" symbol (to toggle password visibility) is in the blocked/hidden state.
- The issue occurs across ALL websites, not just a specific one.
- Even passwords suggested by my password manager are being revealed this way.

- This is happening in my primary and only browser: safari
- It's not specific to any single website.

1. Has anyone experienced a similar issue?
2. Any ideas on what could be causing this across all websites?
3. Are there any specific browser settings or system-wide settings I should check?
4. Could this be a sign of malware or a compromised system?

I'm avoiding entering passwords until this is resolved, but I'm looking for urgent help to understand and fix this issue. Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

First, disable all extensions. Go to Settings > Safari > Extensions and turn them all off. Does the issue you describe still occur? If not, enable extensions one-by-one until you discover the culprit.

Which iPhone is this happening on?

Many thanks for your reply. I’ve done as you suggested but the problem still persists. This is happening in my iPhone 14 Pro Max but I’m having the same issue in my MacBook.

This is happening on my iPhone 14 Pro Max but also on my MacBook. Thanks.

I’ve called Apple customer support, the agent remotely accessed my machine but was unable to resolve the issue. He said that he has never encountered this issue before. This underscores the unusual nature of the problem and the need for specialized help.

He suggested me to bring the Mac to an Apple Store as it could be an undetectable malware.
Norton VPN is also not working. Spent over an hour on the phone with a technician, he also tried to sort out the problem remotely but was unable. He filed a report and said they will called back in 48 hours.

1. Has anyone experienced a similar issue, especially given that even Apple support hasn't seen this before?
2. Any ideas on what could be causing this across all websites, considering it persists even after expert intervention?
3. Are there any advanced browser settings, system configurations, or third-party software that could be causing this?
4. Given the uniqueness of this issue, could it be a sign of a new type of malware or a very specific system compromise?
5. Are there any diagnostic tools or logs that might provide more insight into this issue?

I'm avoiding entering passwords until this is resolved, but I'm looking for urgent help to understand and fix this. Any insights, suggestions, or directions for further investigation would be greatly appreciated!

I highly doubt you have been compromised. I’ve noticed that when I tell safari to not suggest a password and I provide my own it shows the password in a yellow highlighted box. If you’re that worried; do a clean install of your Mac and then your iPhone.

When you say VPN isn’t working. What do you mean? On your iPhone or Mac? Do you have the VPN profile installed?

This. Guessing OP is seeing this.

It's either creating a password and showing you the resultant password, or you're using the Hover Bar accessibility feature.

Basically there’s no way around it. The 2nd screenshot shows when I first select outfill. My understanding is that the password should be hidden as per eye symbol. Then on the first screenshot (apologies for the wrong order) is when I click on the top yellow bar, the password gets temporarily hidden. But as soon as I do the same thing on the bottom yellow bar, the password on top gets revealed again! There’s no way of escaping it.

Why haven’t you done a clean install? Tha is the first thing I would have done to try and resolve the problem. It sounds and looks like a setting got stuck, even though it shows off.
Because the same thing happens in my MacBook and I’ve already reinstalled iOS but this problem persists. It can’t be normal and across both devices?

Ok this is standard behavior. It’s always done it this way. You weren’t hacked, you don’t have a virus, no one is out to get your passwords. Id you don’t like this, move off of iCloud Keychain and go with something like 1Password.

This. And even 1Password shows the password on-screen when generating a new one. I guess this is just standard password manager behavior: when it creates a new password, it shows it to you so you can check it.

Thank you for answering. I don’t remember to have my passwords revealed before updating to the latest iOS. I’ve been looking for videos online and couldn’t find anyone having the same issue though.
