First: Does using patchstick on the ATV void warranties (if any) from Apple?

Second: If I install and decide I do not like the added applications, can I uninstall the scripts and revert back to factory ATV?

Thanks for any help!

If you are talking about Boxee I wouldn't see why it would void a warranty since you can do a reset to factory and it is gone. (which answers your second question).

I have it on mine but rarely use Boxee (or the ATV for that matter).

I'll start with the second question, if you patch your ATV and then don't like it you can just do a factory restore and your ATV will be as it was when it left the factory.

Now does patching an ATV void the warranty, YES of course, any 3rd party modification that is not supported by Apple is going to void your warranty. But will Apple know if you've patched your ATV? Well theres 2 possibilities:-

1. You patch your ATV, it breaks down, but your still able to do a factory restore before sending it back. Then Apple will probably not be able to tell it was patched.

2. You patch your ATV, it breaks down, but your unable to factory restore it. Well then your stuffed, you send it back to Apple, they look at it and see it's patched and may refuse to repair it.

So it boils down to do you want the extra functionality that patching gives you and are you willing to take a risk that it may void your warranty. I've patched my ATV quite a few times and I always end up restoring it as I never use the extra features patching gives you.

How can anybody think you can just modify the ATV's operating system however you like and it would be ok with Apple. Come on lets use a bit of common sense Apple aren't gonna be to happy if you start making 3rd party modifications to the ATV's software. Granted if they don't find out then theres no problem but if you send in a broken ATV that's been patched or modified in anyway then you can hardly expect them to honor your warranty.....

It does not void your warranty! Ask most Apple Store employees that say they have an AppleTV.... they have patchsticked them too.

Yes, you do a factory restore and you are back to normal.

I suggest taking most of your patchstick questions to www.boxee.tv or www.xbmc.org there you will find the Genius Bar of patchsticking.

I have been running XBMC on mine for over a year, I very seldom switch over to frontrow. Maybe for a podcast every now and then. Depends if you want your aTv to be a means to play iTunes content on your TV/receiver or if you want it to be a media server.

2nd question from the bottom:-

What kind of activities are excluded from my warranty coverage?
Apple’s One-Year Limited Warranty for Apple TV excludes coverage for damage resulting from a number of events, including accident, liquid spill or submersion, unauthorized service and unauthorized modifications.

And don't say, "Well the patchstick didn't damage my ATV." because that isn't gonna matter to Apple. They'll take one look at it, and if they see it's been modified you'll lose your warranty.

Ask most Apple Store employees that say they have an AppleTV.... they have patchsticked them too.

Just because an Apple employee patches their ATV dosn't mean it's not breaking the warranty terms.

Just found this as well:-

http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/

Click on and read Hardware Warranty(PDF)

I've quoted and underlines the relevent sections:-

This warranty does not apply: (a) to consumable parts, such as batteries, unless damage has occurred due to a defect in materials or workmanship; (b) to cosmetic damage, including but not limited to scratches, dents and broken plastic on ports; (c) to damage caused by use with non-Apple products; (d) to damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, flood, fire, earthquake or other external causes; (e) to damage caused by operating the product outside the permitted or intended uses described by Apple; (f) to damage caused by service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (“AASP”); (g) to a product or part that has been modified to alter functionality or capability without the written permission of Apple; or (h) if any Apple serial number has been removed or defaced.

Once you patch you ATV you've just modified it to alter it's functionality, bye bye warranty........

roidy...... talk to Apple and they will tell you that the warranty is void only if you "physically" modify the aTv. As long as you leave the case alone you are fine.

To wrap you brain around this concept you have to remind yourself what apple says all the time.... They are a hardware company that makes a software to make their hardware function.

Apple could have stopped the patch sticking with one of the last couple of updates. However they have left it alone. That may not scream acceptance from Steve Jobs but it sure does sound like a whisper to me.

Yes, luckily for us, Apple has taken the right approach on this one (in contrast with their attitude towards iPhone jailbreaking). While they don't explicitly endorse ATV patching - they don't discourage it either. Which only helps the product grow and gain new users.

So let's stop with the disinformation about "warranty voiding", bricking the unit, etc. I have never heard of anyone who patched ATV not being able to restore to factory, or Apple refusing warranty service.

Chipskip is right on the money on this one. My apple tv is hacked as well. And, I LOVE IT!

Apple TV Help

Hi,

Very sorry, I'm trying to figure out how to start a new thread.

I'm pretty new to ATV & was wondering if anyone knows which USB sticks actually work when trying to install Boxee??

Go to ATV Flash and they have a list of sticks that have been shown to work well with their product.

I love Boxee, but am I missing a solution for the movies? It seems to just sick them all on one screen. Can I sent it up with genre like frontrow interface? I have over 800+ movies and one screen doesn't cut it. Thanks.

http://forum.boxee.tv/ & http://xbmc.org/forum/ Is the best place to find Boxee and XBMC solutions. The developers for both programs are on the sites answering questions (Boxee is the child of XBMC).

#1 USB Stick is the Transcend JetFlash 2GB. It's $7.49 on newegg.com

XBMC is a great solution for movies, you can organize movies by genre, actor, etc, etc. I use XBMC 98% of the time, boxee 1.5% and Frontrow 0.5%

I love iHome's Media Center skin for XBMC, gives it a Frontrow feeling.
