I don’t think so. Not because I’m being pessimistic, but patents generally don’t mean anything, they are simply files of what _could_ happen. Craig Federighi I believe had mentioned that they did test fingerprint readers under display, and abandoned the project ultimately when they realized that Face ID was ultimately operating as intended, which was always ‘Plan A’, and ‘Plan B’ was the fingerprint reader under the display.

Looking at Apple in retrospect, they are not always about providing lots of options, they believe in one specific route with certain features/capabilities, and they move forward with it. Obviously the competition offers alternatives with various forms of biometric security, Apple traditionally has not been like that.

Something like this makes sense in the future when continuous authentication is useful, for example, when using a banking app. Or perhaps voting, where identification is crucial.

This multi-factor authentication could get rid of iCloud passwords completely. It's unlikely someone could spoof Face ID and Touch ID at the same time.
