So I seem to recall that when you get your iPad, you automatically get access to all the apps which you've already bought. Does that mean that for those with iPad and Iphone, you only need to buy the app once for both devices??

That's what I understood from Apple but developers might make an iPad-specific version of their app that will be sold separatly.

Whenever you buy an App you have access to 5 devices as long as they are on the same account. So as long as you have 4 or less you will be fine.

Yep. Developers could easily make an iPad version and sell it separately. At least, they could change the name and you would have to rebuy it.

Of course you don't have to rebuy (or more correctly buy the iPad specific version). You can just continue to use the iPhone version on your iPad. You only need to buy the iPad version if you like the additional features and/or screen usage.

But that defeats the purpose of buying a tablet, doesn't it? I guess that if you buy a 3rd device you take into account the cost of buying more content to it, unless you're satisfied with the built-in apps.

Yes, my program currently runs on iPhone and will run on iPad as is. However, I will be creating a specific iPad version. What if you only have an iPad and you want to use my program? Should you be penalized by buying an iPhone only version? Hence, why I will make an iPad version taking advantage of the screen size and split content views.

Developers are pretty much free, as I understand it, to do this and/or to design "universal" apps that offer different features depending on whether they're used on an iPad or an iPhone, so that users would pay once and get both experiences.

It answers the OP's question.;)

Slight correction. An app can be used on 5 COMPUTERS provided they are authorized on the iTunes account.

That does not limit the number of iDevices you can have it on....

I haven't seen any resources on that. Much easier for me to make two separate versions.

Thanks for the correction, and an even better answer for the OP.;)

Yea, developers can create a universal binary. I'm not sure how many will do this. I know at first I won't be.

Edit: On second thought, maybe I will. I'll give it a shot and see how easy it is :).

Yes you can, on my account i can purchase say an app on my iphone, then if i also want that app to be in my ipod touch i will just click "buy" using my touch and it will let me download it for free since i already purchased it on my account.

Ok, so it's really not that bad to make a universal binary. However, I question how many developers realize you can do this :)

The question is whether it'll pay off for developers since they'll have to charge the same price for both the iPhone and iPad versions even though they'll probably have to work harder on the iPad version. Maybe they'll offer the option to choose whether you want to buy the app for a single device or for both.

I'd really like if the iPad "version" was done as an in-app purchase. We will still be running 2 Touches along with the iPad. I'm willing to upgrade the Apps for the content, but managing 1 app would be wayyyyy better (easier) for me!

Bear in mind that developers can restrict which devices an app can be used with, and some may end up blocking a cheaper iPod/iPhone version from working on an iPad.

Wirelessly posted (Nokia N70-3 Ireland-Opera: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

In app purchases might be the solution?
Buy app on iPhone. Works on iPad as well.
However for an added in app purchase it's upgraded to an ipad form with extra features.

Without getting into specifics, I am having difficulty creating a "Universal Binary". I might have to fall back and make two separate programs. I'm gonna try my best to get it working. It's not as easy as I thought.

As I understand it iPhone/Touch apps will upscale to the iPad, but not vice versa.

I have a feeling, despite the iPad being "nothing but a big iPhone," people will use the two devices differently to the point you won't have many of the same apps on the iPhone as you have on the iPad.

Personally, I would "re-buy" an iPad specific version if it was one of those "must haves," and priced fairly. And for the most part we are talking about .99 to $5. It's not like its a $600 CS4 upgrade.

Any updates to this...

I'm on the fence right now, but I really don't want to have re-purchase all my iPhone apps just so they don't look blurry on the iPad!

Updates on what? It' a fact you can and always have been able use your Apps on all your devices (at least 5) on the same account. What part of that do you not get?:D If you want iPad specific Apps then it's up to each individual developer to decide if they want to charge more, less the same or give it away for free.

I am sorry but i want ipad apps to be good and if they are thinking about making them for both this won't happen. I am sorry the iphone is old news now it is ipad time.
