PB 15'': Only crazy or ignorant people to buy it???

Well, I must say: I'm VERY disappointed with the apple world!!!!!

I'm a PC user and have decided to move to apple duo to several reasons among the most important one: reliability! I'm sick and tired of Windows bugs!!

I decided to get a PB 15'' BUT I figured out, in time, that there's an enormous list of problems going on with this machine!!! It's unbelievable!! Problems that Apple denies to exist and even worst, can't get them fixed!!! It's pathetic!!

I concluded that buying a PB 15'' is like gambling! You have to be VERY lucky to get one machine that won't break and let you down!!!! And it is unbelievable how can these "little problems" don't get out to the majority of consumers that still buying them!!

JUST TO LIST THE WORST ONES:

-Screen horizontal lines: UNRESOLVED
-Lower RAM slot problem: UNRESOLVED
-Stock battery problem: UNRESOLVED

I'm still decided to get a apple's notebook but I have to admit that I'm afraid I'll have even more bugs than I have had with Windows!! At least, after 20 years using PCs (Dells, HPs and Toshibas) I have NEVER had such a huge list of problems in one single machine!!!

Maybe it's just too late and I'm still pissed off for getting knocked out of an online poker tournament a few minutes ago (I went all in with AJ, got called with AT ... T hit on the river), but if the PowerBook has so many problems, why are you buying it? Especially now with a Yonah equipped iBook likely available very soon and (probably) a Yonah PowerBook on the way sometime this spring?

From what I understand, the horizontal lines issue is a matter of taste, not everyone is bothered by it, those who are shouldn't buy this PowerBook. Apple problems tend to get resolved in the next release cycle, so this one probably won't repeat.

The stock battery issue ... I don't know what that is, but again, Yonah machines are supposed to have vastly superior power usage, so it's another argument for waiting.

I don't even know what the lower ram slot issue is.

What do you want Apple to do, recall this version of the PowerBook? I'm not saying they shouldn't, I just don't understand what you're getting at. If you don't like this model of PB, stick around, they'll be a new one soon.

The list isn't that big. Yeah, they have problems, but which would you rather have- a OS you have to take a ton of care of or an OS you take very minimum care of? The PowerBook 15" are great machines. The lines on the PowerBooks aren't that big. I've seen atleast 10 and I can hardly notice them. The lower-ram slot is only happening in OS 10.3.9 is installed, I haven't heard of it happening in any other update or even in Tiger. Stock battery problem - huh?

You are perfectly entitled to feel as you do, but given what you outlined it would be risky to buy ... there are always new product introductions that hopefully will have addressed some of the concerns you and others share.

-“Buy a new release”: Is It a joke??? After all I’ve been reading here about Rev A….It’s just sound an even crazier move!! The funny thing is: I bought several first gen electronic products (HP notebook, Panasonic camcorder, Samsung LCD TV, Toyota…). Never heard about a possible problem related with first batches!!!

-“Apple should recall these machines”: No doubt about it!!! That’s what a company who cares about their costumers would do!!! C’amon!! We are talking about the same major problems in SEVERAL machines!!! Would you imagine something similar in a car or TV???

Well, as I wrote before, I want to get rid of all Windows bugs! But it seems it will be just a trade off...not a sweet one....

I understand you don't actually have a pb with those problems, you just have heard about them, in that case get a life because you don't have any reason to be pissed off.

Also, if there was an specific page dedicated to any specific model of Dell laptop you'll find lots of problems, as it happens Apple only has about 5 laptop models and a lot of websites looking at them, so any problem that anybody has seems bigger.

In any case Apple will fix any problem and replace any part it is broken.

You should also consider waiting for the new PB next year, whenever they come and in the mean time relax

On one hand you are freaking out about all the "problems" with the new problems and you say how you are so dissapointed with the Apple community then say "I'm buying one in the next month no matter what."

So are the problems that big that they will affect your purchase or not?

You do no make a convincing argument if you say two opposite things.

In regards to your listed problems. We are talking about technology, it is NEVER EVER perfect! No matter what! You can buy a $50,000 laptop and it won't be perfect and there will always be people unhappy with aspects about it. I would suggest going to apple store to check out the books. I have a new 15" pb and it is an amazing machine, I am so happy with it. No battery problems, no lower ram slot problem (which I haven't even heard as being a problem). And although the lines are there if I squint my eyes and get abnormally close, they don't bother me, in fact I wouldn't have even noticed them if it weren't for threads on here.

Decide whether or not you want to buy the machine. There will be risks with anything you buy in life! But don't condemn every mac ever made because some people have had some problems with on model release.

You are talking as if Apple laptops have a well known bad track record. I've never had a problem with any of the 4 that I have owned except for one iBook power cord that they replaced for free. I'm using a 15" PB right now, I've dropped it twice but it's still working fine. Please don't assume that all users have "issues". On top of that OSX rules! Oh, and please don't SHOUT all the time, cheers!

1. Memory Slot problem- Taken care of, by Apple under warranty.

2. Battery issue- Taken care of, by Apple.

If you have this issue, go to Apple. It will be taken care of. These kinds of things happen. I've been using this 1.5 Ghz 15" PB for 10 months without a single problem.

The screen, unfortunately is not a problem, but rather a characteristic of the new screens Apple decided to put in there. Could they have been a little bit choosier? Sure, given that some people use PB's for photography, therefore are very graphically detail oriented. Apparently for some people is a none issue.

Again, if you have issues with the first two, take them to Apple.

I don't want to yell with mac people and I do understand that some machines (18-20%) will have some kind of hardware problems. It happens with Dell, HP, Toshiba and why not Apples!

The problem here is different:

-There are more than 2 issues repeatedly going on specifically with PB 15'' not resolved yet!! It's like: "Oh It's a wonderful lap but you have to live with a defective screen and only one memory slot!" I'm sorry but I haven't heard anything like that with other brands before!

-I'm kind of crazy and stubborn. I do want to get an apple notebook and get rid of windows...My first option was PB 15'' but will have to move on...


-AGAIN: You guys's been saying that buying a REV A MAC is risky!! NOT ME!!!

Not all of the screens found in 15" Powerbooks are defective. If you were to get one that was you could exchange it for one that didn't have a problem with the screen. The 15" Powerbook comes with two memory slots, not one. I have 1.5 GB of RAM in mine and am not having any problems whatsoever.

Again, you could go with an iBook or a 17" or 12" Powerbook if you think you're going to get a lemon.

Forgive my ignorance, but I thought the Powerbook 15" had two RAM slots? It comes with one 512 still in one of the slots, but it can be removed and replaced with a larger one. Is that now how it is on PC laptops as well? Unlike the iBooks, that have one stick on the mother board and one slot to add RAM to.
