Howdy Folks:

G4 PB 17" 1.66 OS X 10.4.1
I purchased an external hard drive - a 2.5" USB 2.0 IDE 100GB

first plugged it into my Desktop - iMac G5 - partitioned it - no worries
Now in the G4 PB the light flashes like it needs to be in a power USB and will not recognze.

Does this mean neither of my USB ports on this PB are power and I need a different cable - like a firewire ( dunno if there is such a cable - FireWire to 7mm USB) or some other sort - or have to use an external power source

Cheers thanks if you know

Have you tried different USB ports??

Plug the HD into one of the USB ports and click on the Apple (upper left) and click About this Mac. From there click on More Details, go to the USB tab and see if the computer recognizes the HD. If you dont see anything, run TechTool Deluxe and test the USB. Try it and let me know.

howdy Noodles654:

first thing I tried was both USB ports

Called Apple Care; they seem to think problem lies with external - yet both a PC and my G5 iMac have no issues with it when plugged directly into back / powered USB port

Ran Tech tools disc - USB passed yet hard drive still blinks like when you plug it into a USB with no power

cheers:
