Hello,

I am debating whether to buy a 1GB stick to upgrade my PB 1.5 GHZ from 512MB

I am used to memory prices constantly falling, so I know the longer I waited, the cheaper it would be.

Lately, however, it seems that prices for quality PC2700 SODIMM prices have stayed stable for a long time, if not actually starting to creep up.

This seems to be cos PC2700 DDr is now quite old technologically speaking, so it is no longer made in large quantities, hence costing more per unit to make.

I remember paying the equivalant of 30 dollars for a 256MB stick of PC100, about 5 years ago, and now it's $95 from Crucial!

Do you think now is the cheapest time to buy PC2700, and it will only get more expensive in future?

Many thanks - RedTomato

PS, Checking the Crucial.com website, a plain 1GB PC2700 SODIM DDR is $160,

but an Apple Compatible 1GB PC 2700 SODIM DDR is $206.

Eeek! what gives? They're exacly the same in the tech specs - what's the bloody difference?

Apple takes more profit.

THe PC100 example isn't a great one -- Crucial's price on PC100 is absurd because they don't get enough volume to keep the price down. Data Memory Systems charges US$33 for a 256 Mb PC100 DIMM.

You are right, in general, as RAM gets older, there is less production and less demand so the price goes up. Once it gets seriously out of stock (like RAMBus) it goes up sharply.

Thanks,
Trevor

Thanks CanadaRAM for confirming what I thought.

Is it also your opinion that PC2700 is now as cheap as it's ever going to be?

Also should I pay the extra for the Apple PB Compatible RAM, even tho Crucial's own website doesnt state the difference between it and standard RAM?

Many thanks,

I bought my RAM from Newegg, which cost me ~115 if I recall. I think the same ram would run fine in your powerbook. Do some research and shop around.

Thanks for the reccomendations, but I live in the UK, and as far as I can see on the website, OWC don't ship to the UK ( well, they say nothing about it).

I got into the habit of quoting prices in dollars so you guys would know what I was talking about. Sorry if I confused you.

Crucial have a good UK service, that was why I was talking about them.

Reccomendations for PB RAM in the UK would be fab thanks.

xx

Sorry, my mistake.

OWC do indeedy deedy deed ship to the UK. and to most countries round the world.

It's between $30 and $20 to ship to the UK. Gotta figure if its worth it, and if I will get asked to pay tax by UK customs...

Thanks anyway

Dude, go with OWC or Newegg or something.

Does Crucial still use dynamic pricing schemes/scams? If they do, and I'm not sure that they do, delete your cookies and cache and all that, disable them if possible, go to Crucial's website and reload the page repeatedly at the pricing page. If it changes everytime, they're still eff'ing with people.
