PB5 the worst yet for performance? (Fixed)

12 core system with SSD.

Boot time has gone from 11-12 seconds to over 30 seconds.

With each fresh boot most apps take ages to launch. Once they are launched and quit they reopen normally though.

Play a movie. Sometimes there's no sound until I play with the volume keys. Sometime the sound cuts out until I hit a volume key again.

From a performance point of view PB5 is much worse than PB4. The only improvement I see on the surface is that I don't get silly 'first time' warnings from apps when I log in.

I have not reboot it ever since I installed the update. But I don't see you other issues either.

Just restarted myself (first time since PB5) and booted in 9 secs.

I haven't paid attention to the boot time, but on my Retina MacBook the performance increase from Beta 4 to Beta 5 is quite dramatic, especially with respect to video frame rates in Movist playback. Now I am getting 33-35 FPS with 1080p x264 content, whereas with Mavericks this thing was gasping to give me 15 FPS. This is a hell of an improvement.

Well now this is strange and a total boob.

It seems that the PB5 update has not only updated the PB4 on my SSD but also the back up on a HDD. But then it had been booting the HDD version without me knowing, that's why I thought it was slower than normal. Odd installation bug or because I switched graphics cards in the middle of the install?

So I have booted back to the SSD version and yes it's good and fast. And I don't have to make a back up with SuperDuper

When I Update El Cap with any of the previous PBs and reboot, it always reboots to my Yosemite SSD. I then need to go back and restart to my El Cap SSD. it seems that EL Cap, after updating, is not ready ready to boot for a few seconds and my Mac, at least, boots to the next available drive.

And haven't we all gotten spoiled rotten by the performance of SSDs. How the heck did we ever survive with HDDs as work devices all these years?

A Blast from the past here, my first Mac was a Mac Plus back in 1986. That natively operated with floppy discs. That Mac Plus had a SCSI connector on the back. I bought my first HDD (an external Conner 100MB HDD, yes that's MBs) soon after I bought the machine. Cost me $785.00 back then! But, with that much capacity I thought I had the world and the speed increase over floppies was awesome. We have come a long way!

glad to see you found the issue. DP7/PB5 has been MUCH faster than previous on both of my machines (DP7 installed on rMBP, PB5 on Mac Mini) and the majority of the programs that were not working with previous versions have been corrected also. This feels like a finished product finally!

Yes it's quite fast and polished. Can't wait to see if I can test Metal.

Is DP7 the same as PB5? Or is there a difference?

Are you sure Yosemite wasn't selected as your default boot drive?

Snow Leopard was on my 2008 Air, and that's what it booted to after the restart during the 10.11 install. Had I not recognized this fact, I probably would have called beta 7 the biggest speed improvement imaginable

Because back then OS X was optimized for HDDs. Not the case now.

Come on now! That doesn't makes no sense whatsoever. Some folks still rely on HDDs and your saying Apple is penalizing them. When I said the performance was awesome, it was - 30 years ago, but certainly not today. And back then, I was using Mac OS 6!

Must be something. PB5 is 15A262e, DP7 is15A263e.

I never said Apple is penalizing those with HDDs, simply not optimizing OS X for them. I speak from personal experience, on HDD Macs with both Yosemite and Snow Leopard installed the latter performs much faster.

HDDs are still the best and most reliable back up medium. I'm glad I still have the option to use them and to write DVDs too. All internally installed in a nice tower. People with new computers that only have an SSD lose data in crashes more often and forget to make back ups because they either don't have any back up devices or too lazy to connect them regularly. Just look at the horror stories on these forums from people who forgot to back up.

Must be something. PB5 is 15A262e, DP7 is15A263e.

Agree, but that are just version numbers But, developers have to pay for their Previews, so there must be a difference. But what?

I agree, HDDs work well as backup/storage drives. I use one for this purpose.

most definitely agree. Have a 2.5" external and a 3.5" external both connected to my Mini (Time Machine goes to the 3.5", CarbonCopyCloner to the 2.5" since it's USB 3), and CCC runs a clone from the 2.5" external to a NAS in the networking closet. rMBP does Time Machine to the NAS only, becasue there isn't much i'm worried about losing there

Now, I just need off-site backup HAHA
