Hey Folks,

I have a chance to buy a tested & working PC from 2014/15 as one of our local game studios offloads older gear. It's cheap enough that the price isn't a consideration - machine has a Gigabyte Z97M-D3H motherboard (at least 1 pci3 x16 slot), there's i7 processors with onboard video. So I thought it might be worth picking up so I could flash newer AMD cards for use in a 5,1.

Most of the machines on offer have 550watt PSUs with dual 6+2 connectors.

Is that sufficient to power anything folks have used here in a cMP?

Thanks,

Yes.
Some numbers: I use an ASUS TUF RX 6800 XT (TDP max 300 W) with a Corsair RM550X PSU.
Overclocked the GPU draws 330 W in FurMark.
The whole PC with an i5-6600K draws 450 W maximum.
For flashing, even a significantly smaller PSU would suffice.
Idle the GPU draws 7 W. And while booting and flashing/patching it wasn‘t much more.

Bumping this post just wondering if folks would see value in a persistent / sticky topic in this forum for talking about the sort of PCs we might need for doing things related to our cMPs - GPU flashing for AMD6xxx series, etc.

Not a general Windows thread, or a windows on Mac thread, but just a wiki thread of the things you need to do under windows, with necessary guides, for stuff for the cMP, that can't be done on a cMP.

Thoughts?

I have used mainly HP Z series besides my Macs. For Radeon software (not available on Mac) tuning, finding the right thresholds/values for 3x Radeon VII, of different brands (PowerColor, Asus, and one brand I can't remember anymore), and then based on those findings I'd inject a kext to a Mojave Mac Pro 2009 with 3x VII. It was a success. Without a PC supporting Radeon Software I would have dove in to the dark and fiddling without knowing what are acceptable values to those equipment, in a Mac.

Maybe turn this thread to what you just suggested? Maybe edit the subject, it's your decision. I think I have contributed all I've got to this subject above allready..

You know, I'd never noticed the wikitools etc stuff at the top of the page... I'll have a think about it overnight :)

Cheers,
