PC to Apple

Hi All,Several years ago I owned an early Imac.I had to take early retirement due to ill health and parted company with my Imac : ( I then purchased a windows machine (it was cheap).I now have the opportunity to buy a s/h slot load Imac G3-(can't afford much these days but love my Macs).It appears to be in good condition,currently used in a small retail business(they are upgrading to Emacs).It has 256Mb ram and the OS 9....on board.My question is can I run the latest OS on it? I'm into web surfing,Emails,using my digital camera , listening to my music and the occasional software installs such as trying out additional browsers etc. If I can run the latest OS would installing more ram be an advantage.

PS. Also am I right in thinking the above would be a G3-350

G4 400MHz and above is so much better for OS X

With the advent of G5 in desktops & towers, G4s are becoming obsolete.
G3s are obsolete.

I have a G3 iBook 700GHz and it runs OS X adequately, it also has a 7200 rpm 60GB drive and is maxed out with RAM.
My G3 desktop is 333MHz and I long ago decided not to waste any time or money trying to make it a suitable machine for OS X.

Can you save up a few hundred more and get a used G4 - either iMac or eMac?

You'd spend that kind of money getting a faster, larger 7200 80GB hard drive and maxing out the RAM, wouldn't you? Lots of RAM is critical to OS X.

Not everyone would agree with the above poster. Yes, 10.3 will run on that machine and it will do everything you said but just slowly. G4's are not obselete, they're just dated. Many people still use G4's for much more resource hungry things than what he is talking about.......just my opinion.

another thing, if you do end up getting the machine and putting OS X on it, then be sure to do a custom install and only put what you need on there as to not waste your harddrive space and so you wont colg your system down,

nonsense!!!! i have a bondi blue, original imac with a 233 g3 running os x 10.3, and it works. however, i do have 512 mb ram and a 20 gb hd, so it's not stock.

i write web apps using apache/mysql/php, write standalone apps using realbasic, and i have even done some final cut express work on it! (and i mean "real", commercial apps, not just something for my neighbor that sells t-shirts). i'm not saying it's fast, just saying it works. if you can still use something, it is not obsolete.

if you are one that has to have the latest and greatest, all the bells and whistles, then don't get the old imac. if you want a computer that works and are looking to go frugal, get the imac!
