I am a new Mac user who just bought a G5 Imac yesterday. I have been following along with Apple's instructions on switching. I am trying to transfer files from my Dell laptop running XP Home to the Mac via my wireless network. I am the only user on the Dell and do not log in with a password everytime I use it. I am Administrator and there is no password required.

On the Mac, the instructions tell me to go to Finder --> Network --> GO --> Connect To Server. I then enter in the Dell's IP address along with the name of the Dell computer. Next, the Mac prompts me that it wants to connect to MSHOME (correct workgroup). Prompts me for the name on the computer and a password. I enter in the name (directly from User Profile in XP) and leave password blank. This causes an error message that says I am unable to connect b/c user name and or password is incorrect. However, I am able to ping each machine from the other without a problem.

I called Apple tech support and they were unable to help other than telling me to check the discussion boards. Other things I have tried include:
- creating an administrator password on the Dell and entering it on the Mac
- disabling firewall on Dell
- direct Cat 5 cable connection between the 2 computers

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to spend hours burning CDs to transfer files. Thanks.

As an admin on the XP box, create a new local user, "Seth" or something with a password. Then under management, users/groups add Seth to the local adminstrators group. You may have to go into control panel and check the users area, and change how users logon, so that you need to logon with a user name and password. Then you should be able to use your Seth account from the iMac.
