PC to new iMac??

I just got an new imac today (which is amazing), but i have been using my old dell laptop to sync my iphone. I have already moved all of my music to the imac, but I haven't done anything with itunes yet. When I plug in my iphone to the mac, what will happen? Will I keep my playlist, contacts, pictures?

i was thinking of doing the same thing today. i've been having a bunch of problems with my new vista computer (iTunes/Quicktime destroyed it twice). i was thinking of swithcing to a mac but am not sure. i was at the apple store today playing with them. I'm curious to see how your switch goes.

Well, I know that if you plug in an iPod to a Mac it asks if you want to sync it. if you say yes, then it will wipe it and start it again.

all you need to do is make sure itunes is authorised in your name, transfer your music files onto your mac and you should be set to go...

for contacts, i dont know as we dont have the iPhone yet =(

I assume there is no way to keep my playlists then. The only one I really care about is the playlist I use for my iphone... Oh and anyone else know what happens to the contacts?

I'm pretty sure you'll have to transfer your contacts into Address Book or the other compatible program for iPhone on the iMac. Just like it will erase your music and you'll have to resync it with the music on your iMac, the same goes for the contacts I think. You'll have to resync it to the contact list you have on the mac.

Since you have synched your iPhone with a different computer, it will ask you if you want to sync with the new one. Hit no. Then go in and uncheck the boxes on all the things you don't want it to sync, like Music. It will then leave your music intact on your iPhone. At some point when you want to make a music change, you will have to bite the bullet and have iTunes on your iMac set up the way you want. This at least will buy you time. After you have checked and/or unchecked the various items, hit Apply or Sync.

Contacts and address book are two way synced. If you elect to sync these two items, the iPhone should upload this info to the new computer. Music and video is one way sync (computer to iphone). Not sure about Photos.

Thank you sJv!! Not what I was hoping for, but like you said it will buy some time for me to get my playlists organized... The contacts is good news though, didn't want to have to redo all of those.

I just got a new iMac too and uploaded my music and all that good stuff and added all my contacts to the address book and my iphone was synced to my old pc i just hope when i finally get my iphone playlist organized it wont do anything crazy lol

Can't you do a CD (DVD) back up of itunes and then restore?
I don't know how this would work cross-platform but if it's doable then playlists should be intact.

...just a thought.

Just tested this between iTunes running in Parallels and iTunes on my mac. You can export playlists by selecting the playlist and choosing "File-Export song list..." It creates a text file you can move to your iMac and as long as the songs are already in your iTunes library on the Mac, you choose "File-Import..." and import the text file. I believe you have to do this for each playlist, but it's fairly painless.

What do you like about your iMac?

I just helped my dad with this transfer (he purchased a 17" iMac and it got delivered on the day of the iMac announcement) and it went really smoothly. We burned DVDs of all of his files, used WMP on the PC to convert his WMA songs to Apple Lossless and then burned a backup DVD in iTunes and then restored on the iMac. Our only hiccup was Thunderbird on the PC. It corrupted his Address Book the day before our transfer, so I had to lookup on the internet on how to "un-corrupt" it rolleyes and then we exported it to LDIF and then imported into Address Book. It got most everything, but not quite. I think that was due to the corruption before... I probably didn't get enough of it out for the export to work completely (he was missing some "unnamed contacts" (ones with just email addresses) and his groups were missing.

All in all, it was really simple.

Don't mess with that! Just do the backup DVDs or copy (using your network [will take a very long time with a library your size] or an external HD) your entire iTunes music folder over to your Mac. If iTunes has a problem with it, just point it to the library you copied.
