PCI Sata 3 or PCI Sata express for MacPro 4.1

Hi,

I'm upgrading my MacPro but I would need your advise between getting a SSD 2.5" with a PCI SATA 3 or a PCI express with a M.2 Ssd.

My computer runs on El Capitan and I'll install El Capitan on it (perhaps window).

Which of those two solutions works out of the box?

Both work OOTB for OSX (if you get the correct SATA 3 card / PCIe SSD). And not that simple for Windows.

The most OOTB way for both OSX and Windows is plug the 2.5" SSD into one of the SATA 2 port. Of course, the max sequential speed will be much much slower (especially if compare to the PCIe SSD), but boot time / apps loading time are more or less the same.

However, if I have to pick one, I will choose PCIe SSD. IMO, it make more sense to pay for a more expensive high performance SSD and a low cost adaptor, but not a relatively expensive SATA 3 card and then install a mid performance SSD on it (if you really want high sequential performance).

Right now I'll start with a simple SSD and probably soon I might by the Lycom DT-120 PCIe with one Samsung 951 which seems to be the best compromis between price and performance.

So today there is no need to update kext or similar file to make it works - this is good .
