The whole idea behind this is awesome and It's something I've imagined in the past, but the reality of it has bummed me out. I was imagining that I could plug in any GPU, so a GTX 580 like I have in my current PC as an example, not just a low to mid-range mobile GPUs that are slower than what some of the current notebooks already offer internally.

And I know that Thunderbolt's bandwidth will increase over the years to accommodate better cards, but at the same time, the internal bandwidth will do the same, so to me it seems like it will always be a trailing tech, that's only really beneficial for low-end notebooks/devices of each generation.

Maybe the real benefiet of this isn't for really notebooks, but for tablets and even phones?

Anyways, just rambling.
