Does any one know what the unlock button when inserting a pcie card does? I inadvertently installed a card without unlocking the button. All works fine nonetheless.

Physically secures the card in the slot . You want the locking position open before card installation or removal . You want it in the locking position closed after you are done installing a card ( or simply desiring the slot unpopulated ) .

Here's the official PCIe card installation instructions from Apple :

This is the part of the PCIe card you are securing with the Chassis' locking mechanism :

Some longer cards have an L-shaped hook at the end and the switch just slides a little clip that anchors longer cards in place. If you installed a x4 card it may not have the hook so you won't have done any damage.

Thanks. It was x4 card. Is the hook toward the front on the Mac as opposed to the rear?
