I've got the Mac Pro 3,1. Just because I'm curious, can I use a PCIe SSD like the one here in it without any third-party drivers or hacking? I've never dealt with these before and don't know if I need drivers or something.

Yes, but for the blister version like linked you'll need an adapter like described here. There's a version with adapter included as well. I use 128GB one as a boot drive and it's perfect for my needs. In a 3,1 you'd need to put it in slot 1 or 2, otherwise you'll get only a half speed of the SSD.

See, I knew that, I, I just didn't want to tell. Or so.

I never thought about looking for such adapter even though it crossed my mind. Good something like this works, as that OWC solution is quite expensive, which is unnatural for OWC of course. ;)

NØ, øf cøurse nøt. I build my øwn hardware frøm scratch and was in the prøcess øf building an easy tœ use PCIe flash card until yøu shøwed up. Wøuld have gøtten 200 thingies før it.

Uh, my apologies then ;)

The MR thread discussing current tech is here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1685821/

That's where my first link leads :) BTW thanks for thorough research in this matter. A lot useful info there.
